Polestar 4 Debuts With Up To 544hp
Slotting between the ‘2’ and ‘3’, the ‘4’ is Polestar’s fastest production car to date.
The Geely-owned Swedish brand Polestar has quite a simple model naming nomenclature. So we have the ‘1’, the ‘2’ and ‘3’, which broke cover in October last year. Extending its model portfolio further, Polestar has unveiled its fourth production-ready offering. And no surprises here; it’s called the Polestar 4. However, don’t think the Swedes follow the simple mantra of “higher the number, larger or more expensive the vehicle”. The ‘4’, for instance, slots between the ‘2’ and ‘3’ in size and price.
Let’s delve a bit deeper into fathoming what the newcomer is. In profile, it’s an SUV coupe – a form popular amongst many. And the ‘4’ is undoubtedly an eye-catcher. Underpinned by Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), it measures about 4.84 metres in length and 2.14 metres in width, and slightly shy of 1.55 metres in height. The generous proportions translate into a spacious cabin for living and non-living things.
Some of the design cues are out of the ordinary. For instance, the Polestar 4 has no rear windscreen. Also, it has an all-glass roof, which extends behind the rear seats. And that glass panel can also be electrochromic, a function that can make it go opaque or transparent at the touch of a button. Other clever touches include retractable door handles, flush glazing with frameless windows and rear aero blades. All of that help make the EV more aerodynamically slippery.
So, you might be wondering, if there’s no rear windscreen, why does the car have an interior rear-view mirror? In truth, that’s not a mirror. Instead, it’s a high-definition display that takes feed from a rear-mounted camera. One could switch the feed to see what’s happening in the second row. The features list includes a 15.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display with a 14.7-inch projection area and bi-directional charging. A 12-speaker, 1,400-watt Harman Kardon sound system is on the options list.
Pushing the sustainability factor has always been one of the critical drivers for Polestar. And it shows in the ‘4’ as well. The materials used inside the cabin include a tailored knit textile comprising 100 per cent recycled PET and bio-attributed MicroTech vinyl and animal welfare-secured Nappa leather upholsteries.
The Polestar 4 is the fastest production car the brand has created. The dual-motor version, which offers up to 544hp/686Nm, can accelerate the car to 100kmph from nothing in 3.8 seconds. And for the Long Range dual-motor variant, Polestar targets a range of up to 560km (WLTP). Another variant on offer will be the Long Range single motor, which will have a rear-mounted electric motor delivering 272hp/343Nm. For that, the brand targets a range of up to 600km (WLTP). The wheel sizes range from 20 to 22 inches, with accompanying rubber from Pirelli and Michelin.
The long-range derivatives will feature a 102kWh battery. Polestar says all versions will take DC feeds of up to 200kW and AC feeds of 22kW. And as mentioned above, the car can provide power or charge external devices.
The Polestar 4 features 12 cameras, one radar, and twelve ultrasonic sensors for safety and assistance systems. That’s by default. So, in addition to gizmos like a driver fatigue monitor and lane change assist, the car will also pack up to nine airbags. Polestar has also created equipment packs, such as Plus Pack, Plus Pro Pack, Nappa Pack, Pilot Pack and Performance Pack. Each injects specific features and enhancements, such as 22-inch wheels, 4-piston Brembo brakes, Polestar Engineered performance chassis, additional speakers and massaging seats.
Slated to first launch in China, the Polestar 4 will enter production at Geely’s Hangzhou Bay plant in November 2023. Its launch in Europe, North America and the Asia Pacific is planned for early next year. And the indicative starting price is EUR/USD 60,000.
