Kia Reveals Details About The EV9
The electric SUV can gain 239km of travel range in 15 minutes.
Earlier this month, Kia unveiled the EV9 in its production guise. However, almost no information about the powertrain, features and other quantifiable stuff was shared. That, however, has now changed. The South Korean carmaker has revealed virtually all there is to learn about its flagship three-row electric SUV. So, without further ado, let’s get into it.
The EV9 makes good use of the Electric Global Modular Platform. The flexible architecture helps create a roomy cabin and supports various powertrains, more on which later. The EV9 has a 3,100mm wheelbase, while the overall length, width and height numbers are 5,010mm, 1,980mm and 1,755mm, respectively. As far as the wheel sizes are concerned, they range between 19 and 21 inches.
What we saw a couple of weeks ago was the standard version of the EV9. However, Kia has also created a GT-line derivative that will bond better with those looking for a sporty outlook. The EV9 in GT-line boasts different front and rear bumpers, wheels and roof rack. Accompanying those elements is Kia’s ‘Digital Pattern Lighting Grille’, which helps give the sporty-looking version a different face.
Features? Besides the two 12.3-inch displays, separated by a 5-inch portrait screen, the Kia EV9 has features like connected-car services, heated and ventilated seats, automatic climate control, and level 3 autonomous driving functions. Pitching in to support that claim are fifteen sensors, including two lidars. And those sensors help features like Remote Smart Parking Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Smart Cruise Control and Speed Limited Assist function properly.
Another feature worth mentioning is the Kia Connect Store. This is where the Kia EV9 owners can purchase extra features and download them over the air. For instance, the Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 is an add-on that can be bought via this store.
Depending on the market, the EV9 will be available in three variants – Standard Rear Wheel Drive (RWD), RWD Long Range and All-Wheel-Drive (AWD). The first packs a 76.1kWh battery, whereas the second and third, come with a 99.8kWh battery. The RWD Long Range variant uses a 201hp/350Nm motor, which helps post a 0-100kmph sprint time of 9.4 seconds. The Standard RWD, however, has a slightly stronger motor output of 215hp/350Nm. That, in addition to a smaller battery, helps deliver a standard sprint time of 8.2 seconds.
Lastly, the AWD derivative. That has a total output of 380hp/600Nm, enough to post a 6.0-second 0-100kmph sprint time. However, one could purchase the Boost feature from the Kia Connect Store. That ups the peak torque by 100Nm, taking the total to 700Nm. As a result, the electric SUV can reach triple-figure speeds in 5.3 seconds.
Range? Kia says the RWD Long Range version with 19-inch wheels has a target range of over 541km (WLTP). And courtesy of the 800-volt electrical architecture, the EV9 can gain 239km of range in approximately 15 minutes of charging. Obviously, there’s a Vehicle-to-Load function available, with the SUV offerings up to 3.68kW of power for external use.
Kia will open the pre-orders for the EV9 in Q2 of 2023 in its home country. Then, introductions in select markets globally will commence in the second half of the year.
