The 2023 Honda Civic Type R packs a 315hp punch

With a 157.8hp/litre output, it is one of the most powerful cars in its class

A couple of months ago, Honda unveiled the 2023 Civic Type R as the firm’s most powerful vehicle for the US. And now, these claims get substantiated as Honda puts numbers beside them – 315hp, to be precise.

Powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, the new 2023 Honda Civic Type R boasts a power output of 315hp and 421Nm torques. Honda claims the new Civic Type R is one of the most powerful cars in its class per litre, with an output of 157.8 hp/litre, up from the previous generation’s 153.3. Developed in Japan, the 2023 model even set a new production-car front-wheel drive track record at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan.

The hot hatch benefits from a plethora of aerodynamic advancements made over the standard hatchback. Elements like a larger grille opening, a bigger radiator, and a new large-diameter fan improve engine cooling and offer optimised performance. A redesigned spoiler with a new rear diffuser further intensifies the generated downforce.

Cosmetically, the Type R features a host of unique attributes. For instance, all body panels ahead of the A-pillar are unique to the Type R. The body sits lower to the ground while possessing wider tracks and flared wheel arches housing lightweight 19-inch alloys. The bigger body structure is said to be more rigid, with an added 1.4-inch extended wheelbase for greater stability. An active exhaust valve opens at higher rpm for a heightened auditory experience.

The exclusive Type R treatment continues inside the cabin as well. A new digital instrument cluster features easy-to-read graphics though instant performance-centric information can also be obtained upon engaging the +R mode that brings up another exclusive new meter design. The hot hatch even gains an enhanced version of the Honda LogR® Performance Datalogger that combines the Type R’s onboard computer and sensors. Instead of a smartphone app, the data gets displayed on the vehicle’s infotainment unit itself. This aids drivers in monitoring and recording performance parameters during track days.

The driver is made to sit lower than before on new lightweight sports seats. The Type R’s signature red is splashed across the seats, carpet and trim. The six-speed manual transmission is now enhanced for better driving dynamics, while the gear knob features a redesigned aluminium design. The A-pillars are made thinner, along with relocated side mirrors and a lower hood for greater visibility.

Pricing and additional details on the 2023 Civic Type R will be provided closer to launch this fall.
