Why Is The New BMW i3 Such A Big Deal For BMW?
In production since 1975, the BMW 3 Series is the brand’s best-selling model line. And now, for the first time, the sedan has gone fully electric in the form of the new i3. This is not to be confused with the i3 electric hatchback that was produced between 2013 & 2022. The new i3 sedan is brand-new and signals a new direction for BMW.
This isn’t an adaptation job like the i5 or i7. This is a ground-up rethink. A Neue Klasse car. That term alone carries weight. Historically, it saved BMW in the 1960s by giving the brand a new direction. Now, it’s here to define Bavaria’s electric future.
Here’s a look at the first fully electric BMW M car.
What Powertrain Does The New BMW i3 Get?
At launch, the i3 will be available in the 50 xDrive spec:
- 469hp & 645Nm
- Dual-motor AWD setup
With that output, it’s close to the G80 BMW M3’s territory. BMW hasn’t revealed 0–100km/h yet, but let’s be honest, this thing isn’t going to be slow.

What’s The Range On The New BMW i3?
This is where things get properly interesting. BMW claims up to 900km range on the WLTP cycle. With a figure like this, range anxiety isn’t really going to be that big of a deal anymore, unless you’re going on a cross-continental drive.
And it’s not just range. The new sixth-gen eDrive tech brings:
- 800V architecture
- New round battery cells
- Cell-to-pack battery design (lighter + stronger)
This means better efficiency, lower weight, and improved rigidity. Proper engineering stuff, not brochure fluff.
How Fast Does The BMW i3 Charge?
The electric sedan offers hypercar-level charging speeds:
- Supports up to 400kW DC fast charging
- Approximately 400km range added in just 10 minutes
It also supports:
- Vehicle-to-Load
- Vehicle-to-Home
- Vehicle-to-Grid
So yes, your 3 Series can now power your house. For a short period, obviously.
What Is BMW’s ‘Heart of Joy?’
No, it’s not a Netflix romcom. The “Heart of Joy” is BMW’s new high-performance control computer that manages:
- Throttle response
- Braking
- Regenerative braking
- Steering
BMW says it’s 10x faster than previous systems, and it works alongside three other ‘superbrains.’ In total, the i3 has four high-performance computers running the car. That’s more processing power than some early F1 simulators.
What Does The New BMW i3 Look Like?
The i3 sticks to classic 3 Series proportions. Almost. It still has a long wheelbase, short overhangs, wide stance, etc. But the Neue Klasse design language adds a merged kidney grille and headlight, plus flared arches and clean panels designs. It’s familiar enough not to scare loyalists, but different enough to signal change.
What’s New Inside The BMW i3?
The cabin is where things go full spaceship. Key highlights include:
- BMW Panoramic iDrive (full-width display)
- 17.9-inch central touchscreen
- 3D head-up display
- AI-powered voice assistant with Alexa integration
And then there’s ‘Shy Tech’ controls that only light up when needed. It’s minimal, digital, and very driver-focused. Less buttons and more brains.
When Will The New BMW i3 Go On Sale?
Production begins in August 2026 at BMW’s Munich plant, with deliveries expected to start from late 2026. Interestingly, that same plant will go fully electric-only within a year. That tells you everything about where BMW is heading. For now.
