2026 Lexus IS Debuts With Performance & Tech Upgrades

The Lexus IS isn’t dead after all. Rumors of its farewell seemed all too real after a run of special editions capped by the IS 500 “Climax Edition.” Well, it seems to be going strong even after the climax. Lexus has officially revealed the new IS — a heavily revamped version of its compact sporty sedan. The new Lexus IS will go on sale early in 2026 across select markets. And while it may not be an all-new generation, it’s a clear signal that Lexus isn’t ready to abandon driver-focused sedans.

25 Years Of The Lexus IS

Since its debut in 1999, the Lexus IS — short for Intelligent Sport — has been the brand’s answer to enthusiasts who crave a compact and affordable rear-drive sedan with character. Over 1.3 million units later, the IS has become one of Lexus’ celebrated models, known for its sharp handling and distinctive design.

The 2026 model doesn’t reinvent the formula but perfects it. Built on the same XE30 platform introduced in 2013, this latest evolution has been honed through relentless testing at the Shimoyama proving ground and beyond. The result is a sedan that continues to place driving enjoyment at its core.

Powertrain Lineup: Farewell to the V8

Here’s the hard truth: the naturally aspirated V8 IS 500 is no more. Instead, the new IS sticks to two main variants:

  • IS 350 with a naturally aspirated V6 paired with an 8-speed automatic, available in rear- or all-wheel drive.

  • IS 300h hybrid, featuring a 2.5-litre four-cylinder and electric motor paired with an eCVT. Yes, this is the same engine & gearbox combo also found in the Toyota Camry and Lexus ES.

While the engine choices are fewer, Lexus says the emphasis is now on balance and driving feel over sheer displacement and outright power.

Enhanced Ride & Control

The 2026 IS isn’t just about new screens and fresh paint. Lexus engineers have reworked key systems to deliver sharper driving dynamics. The big update is a rack-parallel electric power steering (EPS) system combined with a variable gear ratio. This setup reduces the steering angle needed in tight spaces while delivering quicker, more responsive inputs in corners — a recipe for more natural feel and control.

Meanwhile, a linear solenoid-type Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) ensures the new IS rides with both composure and comfort. Lexus claims it quickly adapts to the road, smoothing out rough patches while keeping the car stable in corners.

Redesigned Exterior With Sporty Details

From the outside, the new IS looks every bit as sharp as enthusiasts would hope. The updated front fascia emphasizes its low stance and wide proportions, while 19-inch lightweight alloy wheels and a new rear spoiler (standard on F-Sport models) add both style and aerodynamic function.

The paint palette has been expanded to eight colors, including the new Neutrino Gray shade — it’s like Nardo Gray, but a bit more unique. Optional red brake calipers stamped with the Lexus logo further underline its performance attitude.

Cabin, Tech, and Safety

Inside, Lexus has redesigned the cabin to keep the driver firmly at the center of the action. A new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and matching 12.3-inch touchscreen dominate the dash, offering clearer graphics and more intuitive controls. The analog clock is gone, replaced by a more modern layout with reworked vents and controls.

Material updates include the striking new “Forged Bamboo” trim, and Lexus has also introduced a new interior color called Prominence, inspired by the glow of solar flares.

Safety and driver-assistance features are equally comprehensive. The Lexus Safety System+ suite has been expanded with improved preventive technologies, while the new Advanced Drive (Lexus Teammate) enables hands-off highway assist during traffic congestion. It’s nowhere close to being fully autonomous, but it makes long commutes and road trips significantly more relaxed.

The New IS: Still A No-Nonsense Sedan For Driving Enthusiasts

The new IS may not be completely redesigned, but it still is a refined and focused sporty sedan that puts driver engagement first. Sharper steering, a polished chassis, bold styling, and a tech-filled, driver-focused interior keep the IS firmly in enthusiast territory. In an era where crossovers and EVs dominate lineups, the IS proves this segment still matters.
