2025 Monaco GP: Lando Norris Wins in Monte Carlo as McLaren Celebrate Double Podium

Lando Norris claimed a sensational victory on the streets of Monte Carlo. The McLaren driver was joined on the podium by teammate Oscar Piastri in third, while local hero Charles Leclerc delighted the Monegasque crowd by finishing second for Scuderia Ferrari.

The race began under sunny skies with Norris locking up slightly into Turn 1 but managing to hold onto the lead. Just moments later, Gabriel Bortoleto clipped the barriers before the tunnel but was able to continue, prompting an early Virtual Safety Car.

During this VSC phase, several drivers—including Yuki Tsunoda, Pierre Gasly, Oliver Bearman, and Bortoleto—opted to make their first of two mandatory pit stops. The race resumed shortly after as green flags waved over the Principality once more.

On Lap 9, another yellow flag was waved after Pierre Gasly crashed and tried to limp back to the pits. As a result, the pit lane was briefly closed, disrupting potential strategies. Once Gasly’s incident was cleared, pit lane access was restored.

Around Lap 20, frontrunners began taking their first proper pit stops. When Norris dove into the pits, Charles Leclerc inherited the lead, followed by Max Verstappen, who had also stayed out. Leclerc eventually stopped on Lap 23, with Verstappen following suit six laps later on Lap 29. This reshuffled the order, putting Norris back in control of the race.

The middle phase of the Grand Prix ran largely without drama until Lap 38, when Fernando Alonso retired due to smoke billowing from his car, adding another retirement to a race that demanded concentration and strategy.

Controversy struck on Lap 50 when George Russell cut the chicane and overtook Alex Albon for tenth place. The Mercedes driver was handed a drive-through penalty for the move. One lap later, Kimi Antonelli made a similar move but gave the place back.

Up front, Norris made his second stop and briefly surrendered the lead to Verstappen. However, the Red Bull driver was forced to pit on the penultimate lap to comply with the two-stop strategy, rejoining in fourth and handing Norris a clear path to victory.

After 78 laps through the unforgiving streets of Monaco, Lando Norris took his second Grand Prix win of the season, making it an unforgettable day for McLaren with a double podium.
