2025 Hungarian Grand Prix: Norris Claims Victory in McLaren One-Two at Hungaroring

Lando Norris returned to the top step of the podium with a commanding win at the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix, leading McLaren to a sensational one-two finish ahead of team-mate Oscar Piastri. George Russell completed the podium for Mercedes after a dramatic 70-lap race at the Hungaroring, where tyre strategy, track position and late-race pressure defined the outcome.

The race got underway under clear skies in Budapest. From pole position, Charles Leclerc held his lead off the line, while George Russell made a strong start to move up into third. Lando Norris, meanwhile, dropped to fifth but quickly recovered, overtaking Fernando Alonso for fourth just one lap later. Max Verstappen also began to climb the order steadily, breaking into the top 10 early on.

Further back, stewards investigated Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hülkenberg for possible jump starts. While Bortoleto was cleared, Hülkenberg received a five-second time penalty.

The first round of pit stops began around lap 13, led by midfield runners including Franco Colapinto, Alex Albon and Esteban Ocon. Leclerc, leading the race at that point, stopped on lap 19, temporarily handing the lead to Norris. The Briton extended his stint and only boxed 13 laps later, allowing Leclerc to regain track position.

As the race passed its halfway mark, Verstappen – running 12th – launched a move on Lewis Hamilton. The two briefly tangled, with Hamilton forced wide but rejoining just behind the Dutchman. The incident was noted by the stewards but no further action was taken.

Leclerc made a second stop around lap 40, rejoining behind Norris. However, his race began to unravel when Piastri, on a strong pace, overtook him on lap 51 to take second. Norris, meanwhile, had yet to pit again but was managing his tyres expertly at the front.

In the closing stages, George Russell made a crucial move on Leclerc to snatch the final podium position. Further drama followed as Pierre Gasly was handed a 10-second penalty for contact with Carlos Sainz, while Leclerc received a five-second penalty for erratic driving, compromising his final result.

The final laps saw a thrilling battle between the McLaren drivers, with Piastri pushing hard to catch Norris. Despite closing the gap, a late lock-up cost the Australian a real chance at victory, and Norris held firm to take the win by a narrow margin.

It was Norris’s fifth win of the season and another statement performance from McLaren as the season approaches its summer break.
