2025 Canadian Grand Prix: George Russell Takes Victory as Max Verstappen Finishes Second and Lando Norris Retires

Mercedes’ George Russell secured a dramatic win at the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.

The race got underway with Russell retaining his lead from pole, fending off pressure from Verstappen, while Antonelli made a strong start to move up into third. Alex Albon and Franco Colapinto went wheel to wheel in the opening laps, with Albon forced off-track and losing ground.

Verstappen closed in on Russell by lap 3 but was unable to make a pass, dropping back outside DRS range. Some drivers began struggling with tyre grip, and Lando Norris successfully overtook Fernando Alonso for sixth place.

On lap 12, Antonelli was preparing a move on Verstappen when Red Bull called him into the pits for a tyre change. In response, Mercedes pitted Russell to avoid losing track position.

A few laps later, Norris challenged Lewis Hamilton before pitting, while McLaren kept Oscar Piastri out for a longer stint. Hamilton later sustained damage to his car’s floor after running over a groundhog, affecting his performance for the rest of the race.

At the halfway point, all the leading drivers had made their first pit stops. Russell remained in control, with Verstappen and Antonelli following closely.

Verstappen pitted for a second set of tyres on lap 38, and Antonelli came close to overtaking him afterwards — but the reigning world champion held his ground. Shortly afterwards, the rest of the field began their subsequent pit stops.

Alex Albon was forced to retire due to a mechanical failure on lap 48, and Liam Lawson followed suit a few laps later. The McLaren team then became engaged in a battle for fourth, with Piastri retaining his place while Norris made slight contact with Piastri’s rear tyre before clipping the wall, causing his retirement.

With just four laps to go, the safety car was deployed. Russell alleged that Verstappen overtook him under the Safety Car, while Verstappen insisted it was a reaction to Russell’s heavy braking. The race finished under yellow flags, securing George Russell’s first Grand Prix win of the 2025 season.
