Trilobe unveils new Nuit Fantastique models, the Ombre and Lumière

Ombre (black) and Lumière (white) editions are shades that now grace the renown grained dials of the Nuit Fantastique collection.

“The visual tension generated by this black and white duality highlights the passage of time and emphasizes the Maison’s unique display embodied by its three iconic rings (Hours, Minutes, Seconds).”

Trilobe has just unveiled the Nuit Fantastique Ombre and Lumière editions at Geneva Watch Days, held from August 29 until September 2, 2024, in Geneva, Switzerland. The Ombre (black) and Lumière (white) dials are new additions to the Nuit Fantastique collection.

Trilobe’s patented design is “a display concept composed of three devices representing the hours, minutes & seconds located on the same plane as the dial.”

Key Features

Functions

The Trilobe Nuit Fantastique Ombre and Lumière editions functions include:

– Hours, minutes, and seconds, each displayed by 3 rotating rings.

– Hours are indicated by the revolving disc on the outer dial. Hours are denoted by Arabic numerals, and current hour indicated by “Trilobe” and the brand’s “trefoil” logo – which serve as a fixed indication at 12 o’clock.

– Minutes are indicated by the revolving disc on the subdial between 7 and 9 o’clock.

– Seconds are indicated by the revolving disc on the smaller subdial, directly above the minutes subdial.

“The largest ring for the hours: the minutes wheel that appears within an aperture and the seconds wheel, which alternates between a “Clous de Paris” centre and an azured ring.”

Dial

The Trilobe Nuit Fantastique Ombre and Lumière editions dial features are:

– The Ombre has a black grained dial.

– The Lumière has a white grained dial.

“With these new editions, Trilobe explores the Art Brut (Outsider Art) movement. Pioneer of this disruptive art outside traditional artistic boundaries, Jean Dubuffet liked to transgress norms, challenge classical representations and disrupt the culture of his time. The artist succeeded in creating tension and energy in his work through the interplay of juxtaposed colours, bringing dynamism to his compositions by “making light emerge from the shadow.”

The Ombre and Lumière editions pay tribute to Jean Dubuffet.

Our Thoughts

The Trilobe Nuit Fantastique Ombre and Lumière editions are testament to the fact that horology does not have to be exorbitantly priced to be innovative, unique and interesting. These are serious timepieces, featuring a patented design of three revolving discs for time telling.

The empty or “negative space” on the dial is an acquired taste. Other renown timepiece collections that feature this are A. Lange & Sohne’s Lange 1 and F.P. Journe’s Octa collections respectively. You either love it or you don’t. I personally love it, as for me less is more. I am not necessarily a fan of busy dials. The Trilobe Nuit Fantastique Ombre and Lumière editions dials are reminiscent of an artist’s canvas, where the “art” is in the overall surrounding details, including beneath the dial – the movement. Both are phenomenal timepieces for the price and will complement any collection. I can’t think of any logical reason not to acquire at least one Trilobe timepiece, whether the Nuit Fantastique Ombre and Lumière editions or even others from them. We at The Cornea Impression cannot wait to see it in the flesh and do a hands-on review.
