The SP-8 Is A One-Off Ferrari Roadster

Built for an uber-wealthy customer from Taiwan, it’s derived from the F8 Spider.

Joining the bandwagon of one-off prancing horses from Maranello is what you see here – the Ferrari SP-8. Designed for a customer based out of Taiwan, it’s a derivative of the F8 Spider. More specifically, the SP-8 borrows the production model’s layout, chassis, and engine. However, there are bits and pieces of Ferrari’s latest one-off which are taken from other models in the current and historical portfolios.

The ‘SP’ is short for Special Projects, Ferrari’s programme that handled the development of this car. The ‘8’ comes from the engine, which is a 3.9-litre V8 producing 720hp/770Nm. The number is also essential for the Taiwanese customer as it is considered lucky in the Chinese culture. And where the F8 Spider has a retractable hard-top, the SP-8 is a roadster by definition. That means in this two-seater, low-slung sports car, there is no roof.

Another highlight is the two-tone colour on the outside. It comes courtesy of unpainted carbon-fibre elements that seem to wrap around the roofless car. The body is finished in the matte Argento Micalizzato shade, developed specifically for the SP-8. At the front, the Ferrari SP-8 dons a full-width aluminium grille made from a single 3D-printed mould. The car also features redesigned headlights, featuring unique masks and lenses. At the back, the taillamps have a hint of the Ferrari Roma about them but with different lenses. As for the windscreen and tailpipes, they have been derived from the 296 GTB.

The Ferrari SP-8 also flaunts specially designed wheels finished in matte paint. However, design-wise, they look like a modern take on the classic rims used on Ferrari prototypes and the 201mph F40 from the 90s. Changes inside the cabin include a modified central console to house the F1 gearbox. The seats feature details in laser-etched Navy Blue Alcantara, coupled with gradient effect cloth. Even the carpets used are unique to this one-off Ferrari.

The Ferrari SP-8 is presently on display at the Mugello Circuit until the end of the Finali Mondiali Ferrari 2023. Post that, it will wow onlookers at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello from November 16, 2023 to March 2024.
