What did Somon Air commit to?
Somon Air agreed to a commitment for up to 14 Boeing jets: up to four 787-9 widebodies and up to ten 737-8 single‑aisle jets. This marks the airline’s biggest order to date and its first-ever widebody commitment, giving it new capacity for longer routes while refreshing its single-aisle fleet.
Why choose the 787-9 and 737-8?
The 787-9 is well-suited for longer international services, offering enhanced passenger comfort, while the 737-8 is designed for short and medium-haul flights, featuring improved fuel efficiency. Boeing says both types cut fuel use by about 20–25 per cent versus the aeroplanes they replace, which should reduce per-seat fuel burn and lower maintenance costs.
How will the fleet and routes change?
Today, Somon Air operates six Next‑Generation 737s to 25 destinations across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The new 787-9s will allow Somon Air to launch intercontinental routes from Dushanbe and expand its international reach. The 737-8s will modernise the carrier’s domestic and regional services, replacing older single-aisle aircraft.
When was the agreement signed, and what comes next?
The commitment was signed during the C5+1 Summit. When finalised and posted on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries site, Boeing says the order will support more than 11,000 U.S. jobs. Somon Air did not disclose delivery dates or financing details at the time of the announcement.
