Seiko 5 series was introduced in 1968 and it came with five criteria’s that distinguished it from the rest. They had to have a robust bracelet or strap, automatic winding movement, a recessed or protected crown and a movement capable of handling sporty activities, a day/date display and some levels of water resistance. Over the years, those criteria have broadened and we now see a new Seiko 5 series that comes equipped with more distinguished features.
The all-new Seiko 5 Sports GMT will be available in Seiko boutiques and selected retailers worldwide from July 2022 and is priced at EUR470/USD 500.) The most unique addition to the Seiko 5 Sport series comes in the form of a GMT hand. Now, this isn’t a true GMT like the Rolex GMT-Master II, where the second position of the crown allows one-hour jumps of the local time. Here, you only get a 24H GMT hand that can be set independently Done in red or black, this marks the first-ever GMT watch in the Seiko 5 sports series.
The new 5 Series has grown 0.1mm in height and gets measured at 42.5mm. The casing takes design inspiration from the popular SKX dive watch series with a polished steel finish. The bezel can be rotated and comes labeled with a 24H scale. The Hardlex crystal (a proprietary watch crystal developed by Seiko) gets a cyclops over the date window.
The dial gets offered with three colour options – black(SSK001), blue(SSK003), and orange(SSK005). Additionally, the new GMT series gets 100m of water resistance. Flipping the watch around, you will find the 4R34 movement that is visible through a clear case back. This 24-jewel workhorse movement provides 41 hours of power reserve.
Seiko 5 Sport series has always been a reliable and fun watch series from Seiko that is not only appreciated by watch collectors but has also introduced budding watch enthusiasts to the world of horology.
