Patek Philippe unveils the beautiful new Gondolo Serata « Zebra »

It unites an Art Deco inspired case adorned with gemstones and an innovative sapphire crystal dial featuring a zebra motif.

Patek Philippe has introduced the Gondolo Serata « Zebra » Ref. 4962/200R. It belongs to the brand’s Gondolo family. Its metallised sapphire crystal dial features a zebra motif, and the rose gold Art Deco inspired case is adorned with 94 spessartite gemstones.

“The Gondolo collection unites our most elegant “form” watches, featuring rectangular and cushion shaped cases. With their timeless style and geometric simplicity, these models offer a modern interpretation of the Art Deco movement, one of the Manufacture’s golden eras.”

Key Features

Functions

Hours and minutes.

Dial

Image: “To recreate the visual interplay of the stripes with the zebra firmly in the foreground, the Manufacture has applied an innovative and refined technique involving a sapphire crystal dial engraved and black varnished on both sides. The zebra motif is then completed with black metallisation and white varnish on the underside of the sapphire crystal dial, thus creating magnificent volume and depth effects.”

Metallised sapphire crystal dial. Zebra motif engraved and inked on both sides with white varnish. Leaf shaped hour and minute hands, and Breguet numerals are made from rose gold.

Case

Image: The spessartite gemstones “are arranged in a double color gradient covering a spectrum from cognac shades at 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock to tangerine tones at 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock. This dark-light-dark effect and the variations in the size of the gemstones emphasize the daintily “waisted” and cambered profile of the watch, ensuring a perfectly smooth fit on the wrist. A second row of spessartite gemstones on the lower part of the case accentuates its asymmetrical curves.”

Case is made from rose gold. Dimensions: Width 28.6 mm * Length 40.85 mm. Thickness: 7.36 mm. Adorned with 94 brilliant-cut spessartite gemstones (2.02carats) with a colour ranging from “cognac” to “mandarine” tones. Spessartite is a variety of garnet. Dial side features a sapphire crystal. Solid case back. Water resistant up to 30 metres. The watch comes with a white calfskin leather strap with a satin finish and fitted with a prong buckle made from rose gold.

Movement

Powered by E15, a quartz movement that drives the hours and minutes. Dimensions: 15 * 13 mm. Thickness: 2.07 mm. Parts: 57. Jewels: 6. Quartz frequency: 32,768 Hz. Power: Silver oxyde battery 1.55 V. Battery life: 3 years (approximately).

Our Thoughts

Image: The Gondolo Serata « Zebra » is a dress watch that will appeal to both men and women collectors. The Art Deco inspired case with those curves is a thing of beauty.

The Gondolo Serata « Zebra » showcases Patek Philippe’s artistic and jewellery expertise. It is a reminder that the brand is much more than its complications, grand complications, and versatile “sports” watches (Nautilus, Aquanaut, and Cubitus collections). The Zebra motif is inspired by the Reference 5738/50G-023 Golden Ellipse. This watch featured a cloisonné enamel dial with a zebra motif and was part of the brand’s 2022 Rare Handicrafts collection.

I wish the brand used a mechanical movement, ideally the manually-wound calibre 215 PS (but without the “Petite” or small seconds). First introduced in 1974, calibre 215 PS has been around for decades, and it is likely the brand is planning to retire it. I am sure there is a reason why they used quartz calibre E15 – which features the same movement finishing as the brand’s mechanical calibres.

The Gondolo Serata « Zebra » will appeal to collectors who appreciate phenomenal dial and case artistry, and gem setting expertise – aspects where Patek Philippe has few equals.
