Panerai unveils the fabulous new Luminor Marina Bronzo

It is the first bronze watch in Panerai's Luminor Marina collection.

Panerai has introduced the Luminor Marina Bronzo PAM01678. It is the first watch in the Luminor Marina collection to feature a bronze case. The Italian brand first introduced bronze in 2011 with the Luminor Submersible Bronzo. Ideal for the brand’s maritime heritage “bronze is naturally corrosion-resistant and robust, ideal for adventures in and around water” and “develops a unique patina over time, making each watch a personal story on the wrist.

Key Features

Functions and Operations

Central hours and minutes. Small seconds at 9 o’clock. Winding and time-setting via the crown at 3 o’clock.

Dial

Image: Notice how the dial fades from a light blue in the centre to a deep blue towards the edges. Inspired by the brand’s historic models from the 1960s, the dial is intentionally designed without a date window. I love it when brand’s do this, as the industry is filled with watches with date windows that are aesthetically not pleasing, and which could have been avoided.

Blue fumé gradient sandwich dial. Hands and hour-markers (Arabic numerals and indices) are filled with beige Super-LumiNova.

Case

Image: Bronze is “historically prized for its seawater resistance and durability in shipbuilding,” and “develops a unique patina over time, making each watch a personal story on the wrist.” Notice the Luminor Marina collection’s new streamlined lugs. I love the ecru stitching on the strap.

Case is made from brushed bronze. Bezel is made from brushed and polished bronze. Diameter: 44 mm. Front side and screwed titanium caseback feature sapphire crystals. Water resistant up to 50 bar or 500 metres (approximately). Watch comes with a dark blue calf leather strap with ecru stitching fitted to a brushed bronze trapezoidal buckle. An additional dark blue rubber strap is also provided.

Movement

Powered by P.980, an automatic movement that drives the hours, minutes, and seconds with a stop-seconds function. Diameter: 12 ½ lignes or 28 mm (approximately). Thickness: 4.2 mm. Parts: 177. Jewels: 23. Frequency: 28,800 vph or 4 Hz. Power reserve: 3 days delivered from one barrel. Movement features an Incabloc® anti-shock device.

Image: The depths of the sea are its natural environment. The small seconds at 9 o’clock is a key element of the brand designed to allow Italian Navy commandos to verify the watch functionality with ease.”

“Bronze is more than just a material for us: it’s a territory of expression. The new Luminor Marina PAM01678 immediately evokes the world of the sea, blending the design of our most iconic timepiece with a material that embodies our maritime heritage. Its evolving patina allows us to tell a story of time and the sea, ultimately reflecting the wearer’s journey.”Alessandro Ficarelli, Chief Marketing and Product Officer of Panerai.

Our Thoughts

Image: An iconic design, now in bronze. The signature crown-protecting bridge was “originally designed to prevent water seepage from entering the case.” I love the “REG. T.M. engraved on top.

The Luminor Marina Bronzo’s beautiful contrast of its blue fumé dial with its bronze case will appeal to the Paneraiisti or enthusiastic collectors of the brand. It is a big and bold watch, and certainly not for all tastes and wrists (as with many watches from the brand). But if you can carry it off, it is an impressive and badass watch to have.
