What is the new Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional in Black and White?

It is a new dial version of the Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional, the current iteration of the Moonwatch. It is a direct descendant of the model that NASA used for the Apollo moon missions.

“The Speedmaster was launched in 1957 but its official space legacy started in 1965, when NASA qualified it for use on its piloted missions. Since then, it has been worn on all six lunar landings and earned the nickname “the Moonwatch.”

What are its dial features?

The steel version’s hands and hour-markers are rhodium-plated. 18K Moonshine Gold (picturesd right on the header image) is the brand’s *“long lasting yellow gold alloy.”* It features hands and hour-markers in 18K Moonshine Gold, except for the central chronograph hand – which is made from PVD Moonshine Gold. The hands and hour-markers on both versions are coated with white Super-LumiNova.

Both models feature an “inverted dial configuration,” or a reverse panda dial.

“The new models are crafted with the Moonwatch’s essential step dial, which is put together with a double plate. The top plate is polished black, with a varnished and lacquered finish for superior sheen, and includes rhodium-plated subdial frames. Meanwhile, the base layer for the subdials is produced in white, also with a varnished and lacquered finish. The minute track is transferred in white on the main dial, while the subdials feature minute tracks transferred in black.”

Functions: Central hours and minutes. Small seconds at 9 o’clock. Central chronograph seconds. 30-minutes counter at 3 o’clock. 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock.

What kind of movement is it powered by?

Image: 18K Moonshine Gold version pictured. Calibre 3861 is a Certified Master Chronometer that is approved by METAS. It is resistant to magnetic fields up to 15,000 Gauss. The Co-Axial escapement provides *“long-lasting precision,”* and the silicon balance spring provides *“superior anti-magnetism.”*

It is powered by OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, a manual-winding cam-operated chronograph movement. It drives the hours, minutes, small seconds, and chronograph functions. Jewels 26. Frequency: 21,600 vph or 3 Hz. Power reserve: 50 hours. Free-sprung balance wheel with a silicon balance spring. Movement finishing includes a rhodium-plated finish and bridges with straight Geneva waves.

What are the case and bracelet options?

Image: Both versions come with a polished-brushed bracelet (in their respective metals) fitted to a foldover clasp with a comfort setting. The tachymeter scale on the black ceramic bezel ring is filled with white enamel. Notice the *“famous dot over 90”* on the bezel. An excellent watch to have – even if you take away the NASA heritage. The stainless steel version offer a bang for the buck that is unprecedented across the industry.

Two versions: 316L stainless steel case and bracelet and 18K Moonshine Gold case and bracelet. Ceramic bezel. Case diameter: 42 mm. Thickness: 13.54 mm (steel version) and 13.63 mm (gold version). Lug-to-lug distance: 47.50 mm (steel version) and 47.46 mm (gold version). Lug width: 20 mm. Dial side features a box-shape scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment inside. Caseback features a sapphire crystal. Water resistant up to 5 bar / 50 metres / 165 feet.

What do we think?

Depending on one’s tastes and budgets, any version of the Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional or “Speedy” is worth having; one of the most iconic watches of all time. Great looking, versatile, reliable, and packs a heritage that is second to none. The new version with its black and white dial offers another compelling choice – whether you are in the market for your first Speedy or are a hardcore Speedy collector.
