New Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport & Grand Sport X Revealed: 6.7L LS6 V8 Debuts

While most supercars are downsizing, the new Corvette gets a bigger engine. This is the new Corvette lineup, and Chevrolet just turned things up a notch.

Why Is The 2027 Corvette Grand Sport A Big Deal?

The C7 generation of the Corvette saw a Grand Sport variant procured between 2017 and 2019. It was a high-performance variant combining the 460hp 6.2L LT1 V8 engine from the Z51 Stingray with the widebody chassis, suspension, and braking components of the Z06. This made it an incredibly balanced car that many loved.

Now, for the first time, the C8 generation of the Corvette gets the Grand Sport variant. Even in the C8, it does what it has always done best: bridge the gap between the base car and the more extreme variants.

You get a wide-body stance, serious chassis hardware, and a new naturally aspirated V8, all packaged in something that can still be driven every day. It’s the version most buyers tend to gravitate towards.

The New Heart: A 6.7L LS6 V8

The C8 Corvette made history by becoming the first-ever mid-engined Corvette generation. Now, the engine behind the driver is bigger than ever before and offers more performance. It is a new 6.7-litre V8 motor dubbed LS6, and it produces 535hp and 705Nm, making it the most powerful standard engine ever fitted to a Corvette. It also delivers more torque across the rev range than before, thanks to the larger displacement and revised internals.

A 13.0:1 compression ratio, larger throttle body, updated intake design, and strengthened internals improve both response and durability. It remains naturally aspirated, paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. This engine will also power the 2027 Stingray, making it the new baseline across the Corvette lineup.

Is The New Corvette Grand Sport Track-Focused?

It is a daily driver that wouldn’t really feel out of place on a racetrack. The Grand Sport continues to offer a broad range of capabilities. Standard cars come with Magnetic Ride Control, a more road-friendly suspension setup, and Michelin all-season tyres. It’s designed to handle daily driving just as well as occasional spirited use.

For those who want more performance:

  • Z52 Sport Package: Stiffer suspension, Z06-derived brakes, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres
  • Z52 Track Package: Carbon-ceramic brakes, Michelin Cup 2R tyres, revised chassis tuning, and additional carbon-fibre aero components

At its most aggressive, this is the most track-capable Grand Sport to date. If you’re looking at the extreme end, though, the Corvette ZR1X smashed a record at the Nurburgring, becoming the fastest American car at the Green Hell.

What Is The Corvette Grand Sport X?

The Grand Sport X introduces an electrified twist. It combines the LS6 V8 with a front-mounted electric motor and battery pack, creating an eAWD system with a total output of 721hp.

The front motor delivers instant torque to the front axle, improving launch performance and traction out of corners. The system also brings with it, multiple drive modes:

  • Endurance: Maintains consistent performance over longer sessions
  • Qualifying: Optimised for peak lap times
  • Push-to-Pass: Maximum power on demand

It also features electric-only modes like Stealth mode for low-speed driving without engaging the V8.

Rear-Wheel Drive vs eAWD: which one should you pick?

The standard Grand Sport remains a rear-wheel-drive car focused on balance and driver engagement. The Grand Sport X, on the other hand, prioritises outright performance, combining higher power with all-wheel-drive traction. The choice comes down to preference and performance. How much performance do you need, and do you prefer traditional rear-drive dynamics or maximum acceleration and grip?

New Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Styling

The Grand Sport retains the signature Corvette design and combines it with some Grand Sport styling updates. Signature elements include:

  • Fender hash marks, now repositioned towards the rear
  • Heritage-inspired colour options like Admiral Blue Metallic
  • Multiple stripes and customisation combinations

The Launch Edition interior features a Santorini Blue theme with red accents and model-specific detailing.

What’s New On The 2027 Corvette Stingray?

The Stingray receives the same LS6 V8, raising its output to 535hp and 705Nm. Updates include revised Magnetic Ride Control calibration, improved aerodynamics, and a shorter final drive ratio in performance variants. New Michelin tyres further enhance grip and response. This effectively raises the performance baseline for the entire Corvette range.

Corvette Grand Sport: The Sweet Spot Evolves

The Grand Sport continues to play its role as the most balanced Corvette in the lineup. With the introduction of the LS6 V8 and the addition of the Grand Sport X, buyers now have a wider choice. At the same time, the Stingray’s upgrade means even the entry point into the Corvette range now offers significantly higher performance than before.
