Moritz Grossmann and Ahmed Seddiqi unveil a new TEFNUT

The TEFNUT Seddiqi 75th Anniversary Edition celebrates the retailer’s milestone birthday.

Moritz Grossmann and Ahmed Seddiqi have introduced the TEFNUT Seddiqi 75TH Anniversary Edition. Limited to seven pieces, it is based on the brand’s TEFNUT collection’s Classic model with small seconds at 6 o’clock.

“The TEFNUT incorporates the classic virtues associated with the Moritz Grossmann manufactory: a simple design that embodies pure understatement coupled with high-quality materials that are finished by hand. Moreover, every single detail, no matter how small, is absolutely perfect. The manufactory is now releasing the TEFNUT in a new version as both a tribute to its partnership with Ahmed Seddiqi and to mark the retailer’s 75th anniversary: the TEFNUT Seddiqi 75 Anniversary Edition. The design of this limited-edition watch is inspired by the wild beauty of the desert that Dubai emerges from – and the home of the traditional family-run company Seddiqi.”

Key Features

Functions and Operations

Hours, minutes, and small seconds. Winding and time setting via the crown at 3 o’clock.

Dial

Image: The dial “shimmers in subtle shades of silver and brown that evoke shifting sands and desert sunlight.” Notice the Hindi-Arabic numerals, the historic logo of the brand, the subtle hour and minute scale on the outer dial, and the subtle seconds scale on the subdial at 6 o’clock. An abundance of overall details.

Vintage inspired dial hand-crafted at the brand’s manufacture using a 19th century technique of silver-plating by friction.

“The surface has been patinated and shimmers in varying shades of silver and brown. This vintage look is underpinned by the brown-violet lacquer used for the scales and lettering: the minute scale, the historic “M.Grossmann” logo and the Hindi-Arabic numerals have all been applied and fired in this shade. The steel hands, made in the Moritz Grossmann manufactory itself and annealed to a brown-violet hue, form the perfect complement to this. They are made by hand in a series of elaborate steps, and with their gently rounded profile and delicate tip, they catch the eye of any beholder.”

Movement

Image: Calibre 102.1 has an array of special features. “Shock-resistant balance with inertia and poising screws, impulse pin integrated in rim; flat balance spring; balance staff with integrated safety roller; adjustment with Grossmann micrometer screw; plate movement with 3/5 plate, frame pillars and separately removable clutch winding mechanism; raised gold chatons with pan-head screws; remodified Glashütte stopwork with backlash; mainspring barrel with bilateral jewel bearings for optimised power management in the low-torque range; ARCAP train wheels; proprietary escapement with 18-tooth escape wheel.” (This image is from the brand’s website, and not the exact version used in the Ahmed Seddiqi model.)

Powered by in-house calibre 102.1, a hand wound movement that drives the hours, minutes, and small seconds. Movement is regulated in 5 positions. Diameter: 26 mm. Thickness: 3.5 mm. Parts: 188. Jewels: 22, including 3 gold chatons. Frequency: 21,600 vph or 3 Hz. Power reserve: 48 hours. Movement features: Lever escapement. Shock-resistant Grossmann balance with 4 inertia and 2 poising screws. Nivarox 1 balance spring.

Case

Image: Notice the Sandblasted finish of the movement, and Ahmed Seddiqi’s 75th anniversary logo engraved on the train bridge. Although much of the movement is covered by the 3/5 plate, it is still a feast for the eyes. The brushed finished of the case gives it a matt lustre – “beautifully complementing the varying shades of colour on the dial.”

Three-part case is made from stainless steel. Diameter: 39 mm. Thickness: 8.5 mm. Dial and caseback feature a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on one side. The watch comes with a hand-sewn vintage-brown colour soft kudu leather strap, which we think (based on the standard models on the brand’s website) is fitted to a precious metal prong buckle.

Our Thoughts

Moritz Grossmann represents high-end German independent watchmaking. The brand is based in Glashütte, also home to A. Lange & Söhne, Glashütte Original, Kallinich Claeys, Lang & Heyne, Nomos, among others.

The TEFNUT Seddiqi 75TH Anniversary Edition gives this exquisitely detailed watch a local flavour. Its beautiful dial promises to be a conversation starter at watch GTGs for the fortunate seven collectors who will snap them up.
