MING unveils the 37.09 Bluefin

MING reinterprets the dive watch, now with an internally rotating dial.

MING has just unveiled the 37.09 Bluefin, their second dive watch – the first being the 18.01 H41, which was launched in 2020. While adhering to MING’s current design language, the 37.09 Bluefin reinterprets the dive watch, and it is their first watch with an internally rotating dial.

While MING wanted to exceed the technical ability of the 18.01 H41, stark aesthetic and ergonomic comprises led them to “take a step back conceptually to a slimmer diver in the more elegant architecture of the 37-series: enter the 37.09 Bluefin.”

While aesthetically similar to the other 37-series models, its design differs as it features a unique internal construction. Two reasons for this are: 1) pressure resistance and 2) to be able “to support the timer scale required of a diver.

It is water resistant up to 600 metres.

MING continues its design practice of reducing dial text by featuring new timing scales that are easy to index as well as to read, for both main and elapsed time. The markers for elapsed time are laser engraved and “treated with a metallisation coating on the underside that allows it to transform from a mirror, to an inky blue pool to almost black depending on the lighting and angle.”  This timing scale uses both colour and diminishing boldness, so it is easy to see where the scale begins.

Another key feature of the 37.09 Bluefin is its moulded FKM rubber strap, whose development began shortly after that of the watch itself. FKM is short for Fluorine Kautschuk Material and is a fluorine-based rubber, known for its high density, great temperature resistance and stability, especially when exposed to all kinds of chemicals. It offers universal compatibility with all of Ming’s 20 mm lug watches and was designed to follow the natural curvature of the wrist.

Key Features

Functions

– Central hours, minutes, and seconds.

– 60-click timer scale on an internal unidirectional rotating dial, operated via a sealed crown at 4 o’clock. The unidirectional rotating mechanism is secured by sprung bearings. This crown does not pull out or screw down, features luminous fill so it is easily located underwater, and is easily operable underwater.

– Hacking seconds for precise time setting.

Dial, Hands, and Case

– Its sapphire dial and inside of its top crystal feature Super-LumiNova X1 markers.

– Its hands are coated with Super-LumiNova X1.

– Its case is made of 316L stainless steel, featuring a polished-brushed finish.

– It has a case diameter of 38 mm, case thickness of 12.80 mm, a 44.50 mm lug-to-lug distance, and a 20 mm lug width.

– It features a domed sapphire crystal on both the dial and caseback side, both with double-sided anti-reflective coating.

– It has a water resistance of 600 metres or (approximately) 1968.5 feet.

Calibre

– It is powered by mechanical automatic calibre Sellita for MING SW300.M1.

– It features anthracite skeletonized bridges and a winding rotor with contrasting circular brushing.

– It has a power reserve of 50 hours.

– It is visible via a sapphire caseback.

Strap

– It comes with a moulded FKM rubber strap. The relaxed curvature of the strap forms a 70 mm * 50 mm oval.

– It has a 20 mm lug width and features curved bars for quick release.

– It features a ‘flying blade’ tuck buckle with micro-adjustment.

Concluding Thoughts

Ever since their founding by six horology enthusiasts in August 2017, Horologer MING has achieved a cult global following and a consistent design language, the latter similar to brands such as A. Lange & Söhne and Rolex. Just like these two brands, it does not need to state “MING” on the dial for one to know it is a MING. To achieve this kind of design identity is priceless.

The new 37.09 Bluefin is another spectacular launch from the phenomenon that is MING. Whether it is the internally rotating dial, abundant application of Super-LumiNova X1, its case design or its newly developed FKM strap – the latter which is compatible with other MING watches featuring a 20 mm lug width – the thought, design and attention to every detail is second to none. Those who love MING watches will acquire one for sure. Those who love and collect diver watches across brands, grab one while you can.
