MING has unveiled the 37.05 Lunatic. It is the third and final edition of the brand’s 37-series moon phase watches. The 37.05 Lunatic features a unique and modern moon phase display – something that could only be conceptualised by MING.
“The Lunatic is a an entirely different and futuristic interpretation of the moonphase, inspired by space travel. The moonphase along with the date function are now luminous, and the watch also takes design cues from the Minimalist. It is the kind of watch we’d want to be wearing if we were boarding Artemis tomorrow.”
Key Features
Functions and Operation
Image: Dial under non-luminous conditions. Notice the unique moon phase display in the inner dial, and date indication at 6 o’clock. The subtle date wheel surrounds the moon phase display.
Hours and minutes. Moon phase. Date.
Crown at 3 o’clock for winding, time setting, and quick setting of both the moon phase display and date.
Dial
Image: Same dial, yet different. Inky black (left) and mirror silver (right) – depending on light.
Made from partially transparent metallised sapphire.
Circular hour-markers are filled with MING Polar White luminous material. Hour and minute hands, moon phase, and date indication are filled with Super-LumiNova X1. Click here to read about the 37.02 Monolith that also features MING Polar White.
“It features a deceptively simple sapphire dial that is partially transparent thanks to a special metallisation and reveals hints of the movement, including the hidden portions of the date and moon disc. The Lunatic also presents the moonphase display in a new format, now at the top half of the dial. The hour indices are shared with the Minimalist and include a generous amount of our signature MING Polar White luminous fill. Like all of our watches, the Lunatic displays ‘inversion’ with the dial going from inky black to a mirror silver depending on how light hits it.”
Case
Image: Side profile under luminous conditions. If it does not say MING on the dial, you will still know it is a MING. Notice the brand’s logo embossed on the FKM rubber strap.
Made from 316L stainless steel with alternating finishes. Diameter: 38 mm. Thickness: 11.9 mm (8.9 mm without sapphire crystals). Lug width: 20 mm. Dial side and caseback feature a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides. Water resistant up to 100 metres.
The watch comes with a MING FKM white rubber strap fitted to a stainless steel tuck buckle.
Movement
Image: The anthracite-coloured bridges are skeletonised, matte-blasted, and feature contrasting rhodium circular brushing.
Powered by Sellita for MING SW288.M1, a manually wound movement that drives the hours, minutes, moon phase, and date. Diameter: 25.6 mm. Thickness. 5.65 mm. Jewels: 18. Frequency: 28,800 vph or 4 Hz. Power reserve: 40 hours (approximately).
Our Thoughts
Image: Lunatic in name and lunatic in design. A conversation starter at watch GTGs for sure.
Every watch MING has unveiled since their founding eight years ago has a reason for existence – irrespective of their price point. MING does not change dials and case materials and calls it a new model.
The 37.02 Lunatic is a super cool interpretation of a moon phase display, and proves once again that in terms of originality and creativity, the brand is second to none. The 37.02 Lunatic is another winner from them.
