Maserati’s MC12 Stradale Smashes Auction Records At Monterey

Few cars capture the wild spirit of the 2000s supercar era like the Maserati MC12 Stradale. Once overshadowed by the Ferrari Enzo, the MC12 has since won over collectors with its motorsport roots and unmistakable style.

Now it has secured its place in collector car history: chassis #12095 sold for an incredible $5.2 million at Broad Arrow’s Monterey Jet Center Auction during Monterey Car Week. That price set a new record for the model, beating the old one by 37%. This also made it the most expensive modern Maserati ever sold.

Limited Edition, Legendary Performance

Only 50 MC12 Stradales were ever made — 25 in 2004 and 25 in 2005. It was a homologation special, as Maserati built the car to make its race-ready MC12 GT1 legal for FIA GT competition. But it quickly became one of the rarest and most sought-after modern supercars.

The Stradale shared much of its hardware with the Ferrari Enzo, but its body was completely different. Painted in Bianco Fuji pearl with blue accents, it paid tribute to Maserati’s classic Birdcage Type 61 from the early 1960s. Long, low, and wide, the MC12 was never meant to be subtle, and that was the whole point.

The V12: From Ferrari Roots To Maserati Glory

At the core of the MC12 is a 6.0-litre naturally aspirated V12, derived from the Ferrari Enzo. Maserati tuned it to produce 630hp at 7,500rpm and 652Nm at 5,500rpm, numbers that remain impressive even by today’s supercar standards.

The MC12 was incredibly fast for its time, doing the 0–100km/h run in 3.7 seconds and reaching a top speed of 330km/h. On paper it was slightly slower than the Ferrari Enzo, but its aerodynamic design made it a serious weapon on the track. Its race version, the MC12 GT1, was even more dominant, winning 22 races that gave it a total of 14 titles. This includes two constructors’ cups, five drivers’ championships, and six team championships, plus three successes at the 24 Hours of Spa.

The $5.2 Million Star Of Monterey

The record-breaking example that crossed the Monterey auction block is chassis #12095, built in 2005. With just over 11,500 kilometers on the clock, this wasn’t a garage queen — it had seen real use, which only adds to its story. Yet the condition was exceptional, helping it achieve a hammer price that stunned even seasoned collectors.

For context, recent MC12 sales have hovered between $2.5 million and $3.5 million. Even the Bugatti Chiron, a 1,500-hp engineering marvel, trades at around $4 million today. Those numbers make this Maserati incredibly special.

The Secret Behind The MC12’s Value

Why does the MC12 now outvalue Bugattis and stand alongside iconic Ferraris? The answer is simple: rarity, heritage, and authenticity.

  • Rarity: With only 50 built, the MC12 was scarce from the start. Unlike Ferrari’s Enzo (399 units) or Porsche’s Carrera GT (1,270 units), the Maserati was always the harder catch.

  • Heritage: Its connection to Maserati’s GT1 dominance gives it credibility that few modern road cars can match.

  • Authenticity: This is a car created during a time when Maserati was rediscovering itself, leaning on motorsport roots rather than chasing volume. That purity resonates with today’s collectors.

The Trident’s Timeless Appeal

The MC12’s record-breaking sale is more than another just a big number. This MC12 has just made a statement. This sale shows that Maserati’s halo cars are still relevant and increasingly important to today’s collector market. With new limited-run models like the MCXtrema, the MC12’s spirit continues.

Two decades after it first wowed fans with its wide stance, massive rear wing, and Ferrari-derived V12, the MC12 Stradale has finally achieved what its creators intended: to be remembered as one of the most important supercars of its time. And now, at $5.2 million, it has the price tag to match its renown.
