Canadian airline expands fleet with 67 new jets, including 737-10s and 787-9s.

WestJet has confirmed its largest aircraft purchase to date: it has ordered 60 Boeing 737-10s and seven 787-9 Dreamliners, with options to purchase an additional 25 737-10s and four 787-9s. This brings the airline’s total firm order book to 123 aircraft.

WestJet’s Fleet Expansion Strategy

The 737-10 offers high seat density and operational efficiency for short-haul routes. On the other hand, the 787-9 will support long-haul growth, doubling WestJet’s current Dreamliner fleet.

Airline Growth and Route Network Plans

WestJet began operations in 1996 with three Boeing 737s. It now operates nearly 150 aircraft, including seven Dreamliners serving Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The average fleet age is around 10 years.

Executive Insights on Aircraft Investment

CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech said the new aircraft will support growth and reduce fuel costs. Boeing’s Stephanie Pope called the order a continuation of a strong partnership.

The new aircraft are expected to enhance route flexibility, increase passenger capacity, and improve fuel performance across domestic and international markets.
