Furlan Marri unveils the beautiful Disco Volante

A reinterpretation of a vintage classic featuring the renowned hand-wound Peseux 7001 movement. The Disco Volante is available in three two-tone dial versions.

Furlan Marri has recently unveiled the Disco Volante, a reinterpretation of a vintage classic and the newest addition to their Mechanical collection. It is powered by the renowned hand-wound Peseux 7001 movement. It is available in three two-tone dial versions: Disco Havana, Disco Celeste, and Disco Verde.

“The new lineup features three striking models that marry Art Deco elegance with contemporary flair, adding a vibrant touch of 80s disco to your wrist. Originating in the late 1930s, Disco Volante (Italian for flying saucer) designs are defined by their sleek round cases and large, yet invisible lugs concealed beneath the case. Moreover, the crown is often integrated into the case to avoid distorting the fluid shape. These timepieces have evolved over the decades in the hands of other watchmaking greats, maintaining a retro charm with jewelry-like finesse, and now, Furlan Marri is breathing new life into this classic with a fresh, modern twist.”

Movement

The Disco Volante is powered by the mechanical hand-wound Peseux 7001 movement, “a hallmark of Swiss watchmaking excellence.”  “First marketed in 1971 and named after that year, this ultra-thin, manually wound caliber is known for its reliability and precision.”  It is among “Peseux SA’s most renowned calibers. It is the first caliber designed according to watchmaking tradition but with industrialized mass production in mind.”  Peseux SA is part of ETA since 1985.

Its movement features and finishes include:

– It has a diameter of 10 ½ lignes or 23.73 mm.

– It has a thickness of 2.50 mm.

– It has 17 jewels.

– It beats at a frequency of 21,600 vph or 3 Hz.

– It has a power reserve of 42 hours.

Its movement finishes include:

– Its bridges have all been redesigned by Furlan Marri.

– All the hand-finishing has been supervised by Sébastien Rousseau, Furlan Marri’s technical manager, in Geneva (Meyrin), Switzerland.

Barrel bridge: It features “diamond-polished edges, hand-finished beveling, straight-grained flanks, polished around the stones and côtes de Genèva.”

– Its crown wheel is black-polished, and core and ratchet feature sunray brushing.

Train wheel bridge: It features “diamond-polished edges, hand-finished beveling, straight-grained flanks, polished around the stones and côtes de Genèva.”

Balance bridge: It features “diamond-polished edges, hand-finished beveling.”

– It consists of black-polished screws.

“At just 2.5 mm thick, Caliber 7001 is the ideal choice for this project, given the watchmakers’ desire to produce a watch as thin as the first release. Thus, the movement fits perfectly into the new 38 mm diameter case. This manually wound watch revives the Art Deco style, featuring design codes from the 1930s to 1950s but with an intermediate diameter.”

Case

The Disco Volante’s case features include:

– It is made of 316L stainless steel.

– It has a case diameter of 38 mm.

– Its case thickness without crystal is 8.10 mm and with crystal is 8.95 mm.

– Its features a lug-free style or hidden lugs.

– It has a lug-to-lug distance of 38 mm.

– It features a curved bezel.

– On both its dial and caseback side, it has a scratch-proof sapphire crystal, with five layers of anti-reflective coating, and one layer of fingerprint-resistant coating.

Our Thoughts

The Disco Volante ticks several boxes.

– A fabulous interpretation of a vintage classic. As I wrote in an earlier feature for a RAYMOND WEIL timepiece, classic three-hander timepieces are often the hardest to execute. Furlan Marri has taken it a few steps ahead. They have not only executed this watchmaking genre well, they have done so in the vintage Disco Volante style.

– They have created not one, not two, but three dial versions, each rich in details.

– How often do we hear about young brands such as Furlan Marri emphasising a movement? For the Disco Volante, the Peseux 7001 movement is as much about the timepiece’s story as are its case and dial design.

– It is a proven and robust movement and will be easily serviceable by a competent watchmaker worldwide.

– The attention to details is astounding, such as the two-tone dials and lume on each of the three dial versions, case details such as its lug-free design, details of the sapphire-crystal on both dial and caseback side, well-finished movement, a total of six strap options across the range, buckle, and old-world packaging.

– All this at a relatively affordable price enabling the Disco Volante to be accessible to a broader segment of collectors.

– We often look up to the big names in watchmaking; brands that have decades and centuries of heritage, vertical integration (in-house), historic and classic timepieces, impressive movements and complications and exemplary movement finishing, to name a few aspects.

– Let us also look up to Furlan Marri, a young brand founded in April 2021, for their superb achievement with the Disco Volante. Most likely they do not possess even a tiny fraction of the resources of the big names in watchmaking, yet that did not come in their way of creating the beautiful Disco Volante. The big names can learn a few things from them.

– Any collector, whether beginner, somewhere-in-the-middle, or high-end, will be fortunate to own one of the three Disco Volante’s in their collection.

– For me, it would be a toss between Disco Havana or Disco Celeste for my personal collection.

–  I am aching to see one in the flesh and doing a hands-on review.

– I applaud Furlan Marri’s two founders – Andrea Furlan and Hamad Al Marri – and their entire team, for their vision, entrepreneurship, imagination, hard work, and that “spark” to give birth to this beautiful timepiece. They deserve recognition, perhaps an award, for this timepiece.
