What has been announced?
Ethiopian Airlines has entered into an agreement with Boeing to purchase 11 more 737-8 aircraft. Confirmed at the 2025 Dubai Airshow, this deal will support the airline’s expansion of regional and international routes and enhance its hub in Addis Ababa.
What does the airline say?
Group CEO Mesfin Tasew stated that the new aircraft will aid the airline’s long-term growth plans. He also emphasised Ethiopian Airlines’ strong partnership with Boeing and expressed enthusiasm for maintaining operations with Boeing aircraft in the future.
Where will the aircraft be used?
The airline uses its 737 MAX fleet on routes across Africa, the Middle East, India, and Southern Europe. These markets require reliable aircraft capable of handling frequent flights and quick turnarounds.
What is Boeing’s view?
Brad McMullen, Boeing’s senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing, said the order highlights Ethiopian Airlines’ leadership in Africa. He noted that the agreement also builds on Boeing’s nearly 80-year partnership with the airline.

What does this mean for the future?
Ethiopian Airlines already operates the largest Boeing fleet in Africa and has the biggest backlog of 737 MAX, 777X, and 787 Dreamliner aircraft on the continent. The new order further cements that position.
