What has been announced?
Air Senegal has committed to buying nine Boeing 737-8 planes, representing its biggest fleet order and its first Boeing acquisition since 2004. Once finalised, the deal will aid the airline’s efforts to grow its regional and international services.

The Boeing 737-8 allows Air Senegal to expand its European network, launch routes from Dakar to the Middle East and Americas, and enable direct flights to secondary European cities, saving passengers time.

Chief executive officer Tidiane Ndiaye called the order a milestone for Air Senegal, saying it aligns with the airline’s goals to modernise its fleet, expand its regional and global reach, and strengthen Dakar as a West African aviation hub.
What are the aircraft’s benefits?
The Boeing 737-8 can carry up to 178 passengers in a two-class layout and fly up to 3,500 nautical miles (6,480 km). It reduces fuel use and emissions by 20 per cent compared to older models and has a 50 per cent smaller noise footprint.

Brad McMullen, Boeing’s senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing, said the company looks forward to welcoming Air Senegal to the 737 MAX family. He noted that the aircraft’s versatility and efficiency will support the airline’s growth ambitions and enhance passenger experience.

The Boeing 737-8 addresses Africa’s increasing air travel demand, fueled by economic growth and a young population. Boeing’s 2025 outlook predicts that African airlines will need over 1,200 new planes over the next 20 years, with over 70 per cent of them single-aisle jets.
