DANIEL ROTH unveils a new watch, the Tourbillon Rose Gold

This exemplary Tourbillon is now available in a 5N rose gold case with a 5N rose gold guilloche dial.

“The revival of DANIEL ROTH continues with the unveiling of the Tourbillon Rose Gold. Following the last year’s Tourbillon Souscription in yellow gold, which was a limited edition of 20 pieces, the emblematic Tourbillon now makes its debut in rose gold with a new guillochage en ligne dial.”

DANIEL ROTH has unveiled the Tourbillon Rose Gold at Geneva Watch Days, held from August 29 until September 2, 2024, in Geneva, Switzerland.

The design of the DANIEL ROTH Tourbillon Rose Gold is inspired by the Tourbillion C187, the original tourbillon timepiece designed by Daniel Roth himself. The Tourbillon C187 is considered the first timepiece with a large tourbillon on its dial.

DANIEL ROTH is owned by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, and the Tourbillon Rose Gold will be crafted at La Fabrique Du Temps Louis Vuitton in Switzerland. The DANIEL ROTH Tourbillon Rose Gold “is dressed in the “pink on pink” livery revered by watch aficionados – the 5N rose gold case is matched with a 5N rose gold guilloche dial.”

Key Features

Functions

The DANIEL ROTH Tourbillon Rose Gold’s functions are:

– 1-minute tourbillon at 6 o’clock.

– Hours and minutes on subdial at 12 o’clock.

– Seconds on the “fan-shaped tri-sectioned seconds”  frame between the hours and minutes subdial, and the tourbillon cage. The frame displays the seconds on 3-scales. The bottom scale: 0-20 seconds; middle scale 20-40 seconds; and upper scale: 40-60 seconds.

– The three black indicators – each of a different length – on the tourbillon cage correlate to one of the 3-scales, depending on their length. As the 1-minute tourbillon rotates, the three pointers move in tandem, indicating the precise seconds.

Dial

The DANIEL ROTH Tourbillon Rose Gold’s dial features include:

– It has an 18K 5N rose gold dial featuring “lignes” guilloche.

– The subdial at 12 o’clock, the curved frame on the left and right which display “DANIEL ROTH” and “NUMERO XX (individual timepiece’s number)” respectively, and the frame for seconds are made of sterling silver 925. All the markings – Roman numerals and text – are “printed in glossy black lacquer.”  The hour and minute hands, and the three indicators for the seconds on the tourbillon cage are made of stainless-steel and black-coated.

“Just as with the Tourbillon Souscription, the dial is produced in collaboration with the famed engine-turning atelier of Kari Voutilainen. The guilloche is done by hand with a manually-operated straight-line engine that engraves each of the vertical lines one at a time. Each dial is a painstaking task that requires a sharp eye and deft hand, with the slightest mistake requiring the dial to be discarded.”

“The dial also boasts an attribute that a keen-eyed collector will appreciate: the rose gold dial plate is decorated with guillochage en ligne, an engine turned pattern of parallel, vertical lines identical to that found in most examples of the original C187.”

Movement

The DANIEL ROTH Tourbillon Rose Gold’s movement features include:

– It is powered by DR001 Calibre, a grand-complication hand-wound movement that drives the 1-minute tourbillon, hours, minutes, and seconds.

– It was “developed and assembled by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton under the supervision of Master Watchmakers Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini.”

– Its dimensions are length 31 mm * width 28 mm.

– It has a thickness of 4.60 mm.

– It comprises of 206 components.

– It has 19 jewels.

– It beats at a frequency of 21,600 vph or 3 Hz.

– It has a power reserve of 80 hours.

– The movement features exemplary hand finishing such as bridges finished with Côtes de Genève, anglage, and rounded, bevelled edges; black-polished curved steel bridge that holds the wheel which drives the tourbillon; mirror-polished tourbillon and carriage, both in steel, and mirror-polished heads of screws, the latter chamfered on their edges and slots, to name a few.

“But the exceptional hand finishing can also be savoured while the watch is on the wrist thanks to the tourbillon positioned at six o’clock. Framed by the fan-shaped tri-sectioned seconds, the tourbillon is a masterclass in traditional, haute horlogerie decoration.”

“Attention has been paid to absolutely every element of the movement, no matter how small, a fitting tribute to Daniel Roth and his vision of fine watchmaking.”

Case and Strap

The DANIEL ROTH Tourbillon Rose Gold’s case and strap features include:

– Its case is made from 18K 5N rose gold.

– Its dimensions are length 38.60 mm * width 35.50 mm.

– Its case thickness is 9.20 mm.

– Its lug width is 20 mm.

– On its dial side, it features a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment.

– On its caseback, it features a sapphire crystal.

– The crown is positioned at 3 o’clock.

– It is water resistant up to 30 metres.

– It comes with a brown calf-skin leather strap fitted to an 18K 5N rose gold tang-type buckle.

“The 18k rose gold case takes the double-ellipse form, a shape that was the foundation of DANIEL ROTH, having been created by Daniel Roth himself when he established the brand in 1988. An amalgamation of a square and a circle, the double-ellipse case was conceived to frame the visible tourbillon at 6 o’clock. Some three decades after its creation, the double-ellipse case is one of the handful of modern-day case designs that has become an ageless icon.”

Our Thoughts

Daniel Roth the man is one of the greatest watchmakers of our times. So much so, that his timepieces and designs – created by his namesake brand founded in 1988 – still evoke wonder in the horological world and collector community. His company changed hands several times. It was owned by Singapore’s The Hour Glass during 1994-2000 and Bulgari during 2000-2011, before being acquired by LVMH in 2011.

Large corporate groups are notorious for diluting the legacy of historic brands and independent watchmakers. Often, they do not resemble what the original founders and watchmakers had set out to accomplish. LVMH, it seems, has done justice to Daniel Roth, both the watchmaker and the brand. They have revived it with the utmost care, attention to detail, and if I may so say, love.

“Having known Daniel (Roth) for many years before the revival of DANIEL ROTH, we understood his philosophy, with its emphasis on tradition, quality, and details, so we instinctively knew the DR001 had to be peerless in every way,” say Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini.”

Based on images and supporting information, the DANIEL ROTH Tourbillon Rose Gold is among the highest expression of a traditional haute horology grand-complication tourbillon timepiece in the world today. One I am assuming Daniel Roth the man would be proud of. It adheres to Daniel Roth’s design codes, quality, craftsmanship and exemplary movement finishing. It is for the sophisticated collector who appreciates haute horology at this level. We at The Cornea Impression look forward to seeing this phenomenal timepiece in the flesh and eagerly await the introduction of other spectacular timepieces by DANIEL ROTH.
