Angelus unveils new versions of the impressive Chronodate

The Chronodate Gold and Chronodate Titanium Moka Editions are limited to 5 and 25 pieces respectively.

Angelus has introduced the Chronodate with a Moka-coloured dial presented in two case editions – Chronodate Gold and Chronodate Titanium. The Chronodate is the brand’s two-register chronograph with a peripheral date, and powered by an automatic movement.

“Since its return in a neo-retro style, Chronodate has been offering a fusion of two different styles: Angelus, the historic brand imbued with Swiss watchmaking heritage, and Angelus, the modern, technical brand with a penchant for extreme complications. This subtle marriage is what defines the collection.”

Key Features

Functions and Operations

Central hours and minutes. Small seconds at 9 o’clock. Central chronograph seconds. 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock. Peripheral date. Winding and time-setting via the crown at 3 o’clock. Pusher at 2 o’clock to Start / Stop the chronograph. Pusher at 4 o’clock to Reset the chronograph.

Dial

Left: Chronodate Gold on ‘Moka’ brown alligator leather strap (same as the Header image). Right: Chronodate Titanium on titanium bracelet. The dial is the same on both editions. The red accents – 30-minute counter hand, tip of the central chronograph seconds hand, and red arrow of the peripheral date indicator – contrast beautifully with the rest of the dial and both the cases. The metallic black subdials feature a snailed pattern. Notice both the minutes and date scale on the outer dial.

Sunray-brushed dial with a ‘Moka’ brown-coloured PVD treatment. The dial has an “amber shimmer.” Metallic black subdials. Syringe-shaped hour and minute hands and applied Arabic numeral hour-markers are filled with Super-LumiNova.

Case

Image: Chronodate Titanium on ‘Moka’ brown alligator leather strap. This combination of the Moka dial, titanium case, red accents, and leather strap makes it both badass and versatile, and is my personal favourite. I love the red markings on the pushers. Notice the brand’s logo embossed on the crown, and the satin-finished surfaces and polished-chamfers of the case. The hollowed-lugs evoke “lightness.” The two screws are shaped like three-bladed propellers – “an Angelus signature that bears witness to the house’s advanced research into aesthetics.” Notice the twelve notches on the fixed bezel.

Modular case. Monobloc case middle, bezel, and crown are made from 18K red gold (5N) or grade 5 titanium depending on edition. Movement chamber, bezel ring, and pushers are made from a “rigid yet light-weight carbon-fibre-based composite.” An open worked cradle unites the case middle and lugs in a single line. Diameter: 42.5 mm. Thickness: 14.25 mm. Dial side features a box sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides. Caseback features a box sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. Water resistant up to 3 bar / 30 metres / 300 feet.

Chronodate Gold comes with an interchangeable ‘Moka’ brown alligator leather strap. Folding clasp made from 18K red gold (5N). An additional rubber strap is provided. Chronodate Titanium comes with an interchangeable titanium bracelet. Folding clasp made from titanium. An additional ‘Moka’ brown alligator leather strap, and a black rubber strap are provided.

Movement

Image: Chronodate Gold. Main plate is sandblasted and NAC-treated. Bridges are bead-blasted and NAC-treated. Wheels are circular-grained and rhodium-plated. Automatic winding rotor features an 18K red gold (5N) segment on the Gold edition, and a Tungsten segment on the titanium edition. The brand’s logo on the rotor – ‘A’ above a star evokes “a bell and its clapper. It alludes to the early days of Angelus, right at the heart of the mechanism.” Notice the retaining screws shaped like three-bladed propellers.

Powered by Calibre A-500, an automatic movement that drives the hours, minutes, seconds, chronograph functions, and date. Diameter: 30 mm. Thickness: 7.90 mm. Jewels: 26. Frequency: 28,800 vph or 4 Hz. Power reserve:  60 hours. Movement features a column wheel and a horizontal clutch.

Our Thoughts

Recently we had the opportunity to visit the booth of Angelus and its sister brand Arnold & Son at Dubai Watch Week. We had a great look at the watches on display, including the Chronographe Télémètre Yellow Gold that won the Chronograph Watch Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) awards ceremony on 13th November. Pascal Béchu, the managing director of both brands, spent quality time explaining the watches to us.

Image: Chronodate Titanium. So much personality. A big and bold watch featuring an abundance of dial, case, and movement details.

The Moka Editions are a bright interpretation of the Chronodate – a bold and attractive chronograph that straddles the vintage and modern elements of the brand. A welcome addition for collector passionate about chronographs.
