New AI system helps predict turbulence more accurately
All Nippon Airways (ANA) has started using a new turbulence prediction system made by BlueWX. It’s the first airline in the world to use this kind of technology. The system uses artificial intelligence and more than ten years of flight data to predict turbulence with up to 86 per cent accuracy.
Tested by pilots, now used in all flights
ANA began working on this project in 2019 with Keio University. Over 2,500 ANA pilots helped test the system. It uses live weather data and pilot reports to give faster and more accurate warnings than older methods. This helps make flights safer and more comfortable.
A smart way to deal with changing weather
ANA’s Executive Vice President, Hiroyuki Kometani, said the system improves safety and reliability. BlueWX CEO Kaz Watanabe explained that turbulence is getting worse because of climate change, so better forecasting is more important than ever.
BlueWX plans to expand worldwide
BlueWX was founded in 2023 and wants to offer this system to other airlines. It’s also working on new tools to predict wind patterns and help airlines fly more efficiently and reduce carbon emissions.
