Air Astana Has Placed Its Largest Order With Boeing

Besides modernising its fleet, the national carrier of Kazakhstan wants to expand its global presence.

What Boeing aircraft has Air Astana ordered?

Air Astana JSC, the flag carrier of Kazakhstan, and Boeing have announced a deal for up to fifteen 787 Dreamliners. More specifically, the agreement is for the 787-9 aeroplanes, and the deal claims the title for the largest single aircraft order in the carrier’s history. Although the bifurcation between firm and options hasn’t been revealed yet, the airline also awaits delivery of three leased 787-9 jets. Simple math reveals that Air Astana could have up to eighteen 787-9 aircraft in its fleet.

Why has Air Astana selected the Boeing 787 Dreamliner?

There are two main reasons: one, the airline wants to modernise its long-haul fleet; and two, to expand its global network. Air Astana’s current fleet comprises three Boeing 767 widebody jets, which connect Kazakhstan with destinations across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. The 787-9, with 303 seats, will expand seating capacity and help open new routes to destinations in North America.

What did the leadership say about this new deal?

Peter Foster, the CEO of Air Astana, reiterated the airline’s commitment to strengthening its network, linking Central Asia to other parts of Asia, Europe, and the rest of the world over the next decade.

Paul Righi, Vice President of Boeing Commercial Sales for Eurasia and India, stated that the 787 Dreamliner will enable the airline to achieve its objectives while enhancing operational efficiency.
