A. Lange & Söhne debuts the new LANGE 1 DAYMATIC HONEYGOLD

The self-winding Lange 1 returns as a limited edition of 250 pieces.

A. Lange & Söhne (Lange) has introduced the LANGE 1 DAYMATIC HONEYGOLD®. Originally unveiled in 2010, the Daymatic was the first self-winding watch in the iconic asymmetric dial LANGE 1 family. Its dial placement is a mirror image of the manual-winding Lange 1, with the power reserve substituted for a retrograde day of the week display. Now presented in HONEYGOLD – the brand’s proprietary gold alloy – it is a limited edition of 250 pieces.

Side by side comparison. Left: The original LANGE 1, here in platinum with a black onyx dial (part of the model’s 30th anniversary collection from 2024). Middle: The new LANGE 1 DAYMATIC HONEYGOLD. The DAYMATIC is a mirror image of the original. Yet both dials adhere to the rules of the Golden Ratio, an ancient mathematical principle. Right: The 5-Minute Clock at the Semper Opera House in Dresden, Germany. It is the inspiration for the Lange 1’s outsize date. (Image credit: A. Lange & Söhne website.)

“With its distinctive design, sophisticated manufacture movement and artisanal finissage, the LANGE 1 DAYMATIC HONEYGOLD presents itself as a timepiece with a strong personality for aficionados of self-winding watches. Its exclusive case material and the rare colour combination make it into an elegant classic with a high recognition value.”Anthony de Haas, Director of Product Development.

Key Features

Functions and Operations

Hours and minutes. Subsidiary seconds with a stop-seconds function. Lange outsize date. Retrograde day-of-the-week display. Crown at 3 o’clock for winding and time-setting. Pusher at 10 o’clock for date-setting. Corrector at 9 o’clock for changing the day-of-the-week.

Dial

Image: Notice the slightly recessed hour and minute circle. The date “wheels” (the Lange outsize date features a tens cross and a units disc) is the same brown colour as the dial – an aesthetically pleasing touch. The vertical day-of-the-week indicator will perform a jump when it is time to change from Sunday to Monday. “WOCHENTAG” means days of the week in German. I love how “AUTOMATIK” is spelt with a “K”.

Brown dial made from 925 silver. Hands, hour-markers (both the Roman numerals and diamond-shaped) and the frame for the outsize date are made from 750 gold.

Movement

Image: A view I would never tire off. The movement features four individually screwed plates that visually resemble the brand’s traditional three-quarter plate. It is “crafted to the most exacting Lange quality standards, decorated and assembled by hand; precision-adjusted in five positions; central rotor in 875 gold (21 carats) with centrifugal mass in 950 platinum; balance cock engraved by hand.” There are rotors, then there are rotors, and then there are rotors. The LANGE 1 DAYMATIC’s is the latter. A work of art in itself. The four slender spokes protect both the rotor from shocks, and the movement from high strain. Notice the blue screws and screwed gold chatons. All Lange movements are assembled twice.

Powered by Lange manufacture calibre L021.1, a self-winding movement that drives the hours, minutes, seconds with a stop-seconds function, outsize date, and retrograde day-of-the-week display. Diameter: 31.6 mm. Thickness: 6.1 mm. Parts: 426. Jewels: 67. Screwed gold chatons: 7. Frequency: 21,600 vph or 3 Hz. Power reserve: 50 hours.

Image: A closer look at the movement. Notice the hand engraved balance cock and the variable inertia or free-sprung balance wheel. Together with its luxurious beat rate of 3 Hz or 21,600 vph means it is harder for watchmakers to regulate, requiring more talent and finesse. With the exception of the brand’s ODYSSEUS collection (they beat at 4 Hz or 28,800 vph), all their other watches beat at a luxurious rate of 3 Hz (or even lower at 2.5 Hz or 18,000 vph such as the ZEITWERK Minute Repeater). Lange is one of the very few watchmakers who produce hairsprings in-house.

Movement features: Lever escapement. Free-sprung and shock-resistant balance wheel with eccentric poising weights. Lange manufactured superior-quality balance spring. Precision beat adjustment system with lateral setscrew and whiplash spring.

Case

Image: “The patented honey gold, which is reserved for very few, exclusive models, is particularly remarkable. It is harder than other gold alloys and registered under the trademark of HONEYGOLD®. The material owes its name to the warm hue, ranging between pink and white gold.” Notice the pusher for the date, corrector for the day-of-the-week, and the brushed finish of the caseband.

Made from 750 HONEYGOLD. Diameter: 39.5 mm. Thickness: 10.4 mm. Dial and caseback feature a sapphire crystal, with a Mohs hardness of 9. Water resistant up to 3 bar or approximately 30 metres. Watch comes with a taupe hand-stitched alligator leather strap fitted to a prong buckle made from 750 HONEYGOLD.

Our Thoughts

By flipping over its dial sideways, incorporating a vertical retrograde day-of-the-week display (instead of the power reserve indicator), and with all functions driven by an artisanal and beautifully finished haute-horology movement, the LANGE 1 DAYMATIC was an enticing addition to the iconic LANGE 1 collection. Albeit one that I think was not wildly successful for Lange, hence discontinued a few years ago. Previous references included versions in pink gold with an argenté dial, yellow gold with a champagne dial, platinum with a rhodié dial, white gold with a deep-blue dial, and “25th Anniversary” edition in white gold with a blue-printed argenté dial (and maybe few others).

Image: Lange makes about 5000 watches a year, and faces unprecedented global demand. The demand for the LANGE 1 DAYMATIC HONEYGOLD might well exceed its limited production run of 250 pieces; meaning the brand will face a tough time with global allocations. If the brand’s collectors had something to do with bringing this model back, then God bless them. I hope the brand finds a way to make this a regular catalogue reference once again. Since they cannot bring back earlier references, it will be interesting to see how they do so (if they decide to do so). A moon phase version is a possibility.

With interest in the brand at an all-time high, especially among a new generation of collectors discovering the brand for the first time – as I encountered at their impressive booth during the recently held Dubai Watch Week 2025 – the LANGE 1 DAYMATIC can be tempting for them. I had the opportunity to spend quality time with both Mr. Wilhelm Schmid, Managing Director, and Mr. Robert Hoffmann, Head of ZEITWERK, whose insights and perspectives on both the brand and watchmaking industry were invaluable to me.

Time will tell if the brand finds a way to bring back the LANGE 1 DAYMATIC as part of their regular collection once again. For now, let us celebrate the LANGE 1 DAYMATIC HONEYGOLD, an exciting watch from one of the greatest watch brands in the world.
