DOXA pays tribute to Clive Cussler with a new watch

What is the new DOXA SUB 300 Ti5 Clive Cussler?

It is DOXA’s fourth homage to the Clive Cussler, “the celebrated American novelist, maritime explorer and founder of NUMA.” NUMA is the acronym for National Underwater and Marine Agency, a non-profit organisation Cussler founded in 1979. The DOXA SUB 300 Ti5 Clive Cussler reintroduces Grade 5 titanium to the brand; both the case and the innovative two-level dial architecture are crafted from it. It is based on the brand’s SUB 300, a model introduced in 1967 as a dive watch for the public yet adhering to the demanding criteria of professional diving.

What are its dial features?

Image: The dial features a sandblasted finish. The minute markers and date aperture on the upper dial are laser cut as the hour-markers to perfectly match the proportions on the lower dial. The large minute hand is a historic design feature of the SUB 300 and is DOXA orange-coloured (a tribute to the original). It greatly enhances visibility and reading of critical information at depth. 15, 7, and 31 on the date window are the same shade of orange, paying homage to Clive Cussler’s birthdate. He was born on 15th July 1931 and died on 24th February 2020. He would have celebrated his 95th birthday.

Two super imposed dials crafted from Grade 5 titanium “which together create a layered effect combining technical precision with visual impact.” The Super-LumiNova hour-markers and minute track are on the lower dial. The laser-cut openings on the upper dial perfectly match the proportions of the hour-markers on the lower dial. Both dials have a “short distance” between them. The hour, minute and square tip on the seconds hand are coated with Super-LumiNova.

What are its case and strap features?

It features the brand’s patented unidirectional bezel. “Its dual scale correlates depth and dive time, helping divers remain within the no-decompression limits established by the US Navy.” The depth indications on the bezel’s outer ring are DOXA orange-coloured. The markings on the inner bezel correspond with the dive time. Both the screw-down crown and caseback are made from Grade 5 titanium. The caseback features the NUMA emblem, COSC-certification and individual limited edition number (XXX/300) of the watch.

Its case is crafted from Grade 5 titanium, measuring 42.5 mm (width) * 45 mm (length) * 13.4 mm (thickness). Dial side features a scratch-resistant “Glass Box” sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment. Water resistant up to 30 ATM, which is approximately 300 metres or 984 feet.

The watch comes with a black Dive Flex rubber strap fitted with a pin buckle made from Grade 5 titanium.

Is it powered by an automatic movement?

The black Dive Flex rubber strap features “a tropical-inspired aesthetic, whose signature perforated pattern evokes the spirit of the 1960s, when the original SUB 300 opened the world of professional diving to the wider public.”

Yes. It is powered by the Sellita SW200-1, a Swiss Made automatic movement that drives the hours, minutes, hacking seconds, and date. It features 26 jewels, beats at a modern frequency of 4 Hz or 28,800 vph and delivers a power reserve of approximately 38 hours. The movement is COSC-certified.
