Stellantis & Wayve Partner To Bring AI-Powered Hands-Free Driving To Production Cars By 2028

The new Level 2++ system promises smarter, more natural autonomous driving across both highways and city roads, with the first rollout planned for 2028.

Stellantis has announced a strategic partnership with Wayve to introduce hands-free supervised automated driving technology across its future vehicles. The collaboration will integrate Wayve’s AI Driver software into Stellantis’ STLA AutoDrive platform, targeting Level 2++ automated driving capabilities in both urban and highway conditions.

The first production deployment is planned for North America in 2028, with the system designed to scale across multiple Stellantis brands and global markets.

What Is The Stellantis And Wayve Partnership About?

Stellantis plans to integrate Wayve’s AI-powered driving intelligence into its STLA AutoDrive platform to deliver hands-free supervised automated driving across highways and cities. The collaboration combines Stellantis’ vehicle engineering and manufacturing scale with Wayve’s AI-driven autonomous technology.

What Level Of Autonomous Driving Will The System Offer?

The initial system will offer Level 2++ automated driving. This means the vehicle can handle steering, acceleration, and braking in certain situations, but the driver must remain attentive and ready to take control at all times.

Stellantis & Wayve Partnership Announced

The system is being developed for continuous hands-free driving from the starting point to the destination across both urban roads and highways, going beyond conventional highway-focused ADAS systems.

How Is Wayve’s AI Technology Different From Traditional ADAS Systems?

Wayve uses an end-to-end AI driving model instead of relying heavily on pre-mapped routes or rule-based coding. Its AI learns from real-world driving data and is designed to adapt across different environments, vehicle types, and road conditions.

The technology is also designed to continuously improve through learning from real-world driving behaviour, helping deliver more natural and human-like driving assistance.

What Is Stellantis STLA AutoDrive Platform?

STLA AutoDrive is Stellantis’ scalable automated driving architecture designed for deployment across its global portfolio of brands, including Jeep, Dodge, Peugeot, Citroën, and Ram.

The platform is designed to support future upgrades toward higher levels of automation as regulations evolve and customer demand increases.

When Will The AI Driving Technology Launch?

The first production integration is planned for North America in 2028. Stellantis says the technology is being developed to scale efficiently across multiple vehicle platforms and international markets over time.

According to Wayve CEO Alex Kendall, the companies already demonstrated a prototype integration on Stellantis vehicles in less than two months, with early testing showing promising results.

Why Is This Partnership Important For Stellantis?

The partnership gives Stellantis access to advanced AI-first autonomous driving technology without developing the complete software ecosystem internally. It also strengthens Stellantis’ position against rivals such as Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, and BYD, all of which are expanding their autonomous driving and advanced driver-assistance technologies aggressively.

The scalable AI architecture could also pave the way for future Stellantis vehicles to support more advanced autonomous capabilities as regulations and infrastructure evolve globally.
