What Is The McLaren MCL-HY GTR?
The McLaren MCL-HY GTR is a track-only hypercar derived directly from the brand’s 2027 FIA World Endurance Championship contender. In essence, it is the customer version of the brand’s Le Mans prototype, engineered alongside the race car itself.
It also has some massive shoes to fill! McLaren calls it the spiritual successor to the legendary F1 GTR — the same car that won Le Mans outright in 1995. This is McLaren’s second shot at endurance racing dominance, this time with customers along for the ride.

Why Is The New McLaren Hypercar Such A Big Deal?
Firstly, because McLaren hasn’t done this in nearly three decades. For the first time since the McLaren F1 GTR, you can own a version of the exact machine McLaren will use to fight for overall victory at Le Mans. Not a lookalike. Not a detuned version. You get the real architecture, shared DNA, and the same engineering philosophy. In fact, since the customer version is not governed by FIA rules, McLaren was able to make it produce more power than the racecar!
The McLaren MCL-HY GTR also marks a rare, deep collaboration between McLaren Racing and McLaren Automotive. One builds race winners. The other builds road cars. And here, they’ve merged into a single programme with one goal: win.
What Powers The McLaren MCL-HY GTR?
Under the carbon bodywork, you get a proper race-bred setup. It is powered by a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 producing 720hp and is paired with a hardcore track-oriented Xtrac 7-speed sequential gearbox. Making it even more hair-raising is the fact that all 720 horses go only to the rear wheels.
The headline here is: No hybrid system! While the actual WEC racecar runs a hybrid setup and produces around 697hp, the GTR ditches the electric assistance entirely. Less weight, less complexity, more raw aggression. The result is a lighter car, weighing under 1,000 kilos, but has more power than the racecar. Mental.
This gives it a ridiculous power-to-weight ratio of under 720hp/tonne. That places it in hypercar absurdity territory. For reference, the wild McLaren P1 has a power-to-weight ratio of 647hp/tonne, which feels tame in the face of the MCL-HY GTR. To help keep all this madness in check, you can rely on carbon racing rotors and some big, round titanium ones between your legs.
How Close Is It To The Actual Race Car?
The chassis, engine architecture, gearbox, and overall layout mirror the 2027 Hypercar. What changes is usability. McLaren has simplified systems to make it accessible to owners:
- ABS replaces complex brake-by-wire systems
- Traction control added for manageability
- Multiple engine maps for adjustable power delivery
In short, it’s still a race car, but one that won’t require a full factory team just to start it.

Every line on the MCL-HY GTR exists for performance. It looks like a Le Mans prototype because, fundamentally, it is one. But McLaren hasn’t pushed aside its heritage.
