IWC Schaffhausen unveils a new version of an icon

The Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium® is an all-black watch. It is a limited edition of 1,500 pieces.

What is the IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium?

It is an all-black version of IWC Schaffhausen’s Portugieser Chronograph, its vertical two-register chronograph. First introduced in 1998, the Portugieser Chronograph is a modern-day horological icon.

“With its clean, pure, and timelessly relevant aesthetic, the Portugieser Chronograph has captivated me from the beginning. I am excited to combine this unique design with Ceratanium®, one of our most significant material innovations. The all-black execution is different from anything we have ever done before. It emphasizes the chronograph’s mere shape, ensuring that nothing distracts the eye from its distinctive silhouette.” – Christian Knoop, Creative Director at IWC Schaffhausen.

What are its dial features?

Its black dial features black hands and applied black Arabic numeral hour-markers, indices and quarter-second scale (outer flange). Functions are central hours and minutes, small-seconds at 6 o’clock, central chronograph seconds, and 30-minute counter at 9 o’clock.

What is Ceratanium?

Image: Ceratanium is made from a special titanium alloy and fired at extremely high temperatures in a kiln. This results in a dark and metallic finish.

It is a proprietary material developed by the brand that “combines the lightness and robustness of titanium with a hardness and scratch-resistance similar to that of ceramic.”

The model’s case, crown, and chronograph pushers are made from this material. It measures 41 mm (diameter) * 13.1 mm (thickness). Dial side features a convex sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides. Caseback features a sapphire crystal. Water resistant up to 3 bar or approximately 30 metres. Watch comes with black rubber strap fitted with a Ceratanium pin buckle.

Is it powered by an automatic movement?

Yes. It is powered by IWC-manufactured calibre 69355, an automatic column-wheel chronograph movement that drives the central hours and minutes, small hacking seconds (6 o’clock), and chronograph functions: central seconds and 30-minute counter (12 o’clock). It comprises of 205 parts, 27 jewels, beats at a modern rate of 4 Hz or 28,800 vph and has a power reserve of 46 hours.

What do we think?

A key aspect of stealthy black dial watches is that their details become more (or less) visible depending on the wearer’s wrist angle capturing light. The time display and other functions (chronograph in this case) are unique to him or her. The Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium falls in this category of IYKYN (if you know you know) kind of watch. You either love it or you don’t. Hublot’s Classic Fusion Yohji Yamamoto All Black Camo is another all-black watch with interesting details, mostly visible to the wearer.

The Portugieser Chronograph Ceratanium’s all-black look have transformed this icon into a bold and badass watch, one that should find homes with watch collectors and enthusiasts easily.
