Mercedes-AMG has updated the GLC53 4MATIC+ SUV and coupé versions with changes to the power unit, chassis equipment, and optional packages. The SUV/coupé is offered with a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, a nine-gear automatic, and variable all-wheel-drive system.
Engine and Performance Figures: What Are They?
The engine used in the GLC 53 is an improved 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that employs an auxiliary electric compressor.
Power: 449 bhp
Torque: 600 Nm (640 Nm overboost for 10 seconds)
0-100 kmph: 4.2 seconds with RACE mode
Top Speed: 250 kmph (Up to 270 kmph with the AMG Driver’s package)
Updates include a new cylinder head, intake system, and intercooler. The 48-volt integrated starter-generator enables up to 22 bhp temporary boost power and features an energy recuperation function.
The combined fuel consumption rate ranges from 9.9 l/100 km to 9.2 l/100 km, depending on body style and features.
How Does the Drivetrain Operate?
The engine comes combined with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission. Manual gear shifting is possible through paddles placed on the steering wheel.
AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive is fitted as standard, which allows for variable attribute allocation for the axles. In some cases, the front axle can be decoupled for greater fuel efficiency. The rear limited-slip differential with electronic control and Drift Mode are available with the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package. The braked towing capacity is 2,400 kg.
What Packages and Design Options Are Available?
The AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension uses adaptive damping and has three settings: Comfort, Sport, and Sport+.
Standard features of the rear axle steering system include up to 2.5 degrees of opposite-direction steering at lower speeds and parallel steering during higher speeds. The braking hardware consists of 390 mm front discs with four-piston callipers and 360 mm rear discs.
The driving modes available are Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual, and RACE with the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS. Active engine mounts and limited-slip rear differential are also part of the package.
For its part, the Golden Accents Package can be ordered for one year after launch. This includes exterior details trimmed in ‘tech gold,’ 21-inch forged wheels, and contrast stitching.
