New Mercedes-Benz S-Class Update: Design, Technology, Safety And Pricing Explained

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the updated version of the S-Class, the company’s flagship luxury saloon car.

What are the major changes to the car’s exterior design?

Mercedes-Benz has introduced a number of changes to the car’s exterior to set it apart from the previous version of the S-Class saloon car. For the first time, the company has introduced the option of an illuminated Mercedes-Benz star on the bonnet of the car, accompanied by a larger illuminated grille.

In addition, the updated version of the S-Class has new taillights with star-shaped light elements, while the option of side sill projection light, which shows the Mercedes-Benz lettering on the ground when the driver enters and leaves the vehicle, has also been introduced.

How does the new MB.OS platform affect the digital features and assistance systems?

At the heart of the new S-Class is the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), a new software and hardware architecture that combines infotainment, driver assistance, comfort, and vehicle functions into a single system. The Mercedes-Benz Operating System also supports over-the-air updates for selected features via the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud.

What updates have been made to the MBUX infotainment and navigation systems?

The new S-Class features the fourth generation of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system. The standard equipment list now includes the MBUX Superscreen, which combines a 14.4-inch display and a 12.3-inch display in the front passenger area under a single piece of glass. The digital instrument cluster is a separate unit and is available with an optional 3D display.

How does the updated S-Class address interior comfort and rear-seat functionality?
Interior design changes have focused on making it more usable and comfortable. The dashboard and console have been redesigned to accommodate the new infotainment displays. Wireless charging is available for two smartphones in the front area and is complemented by high-power USB-C ports.

What powertrain and chassis enhancements are available?

The updated S-Class features a range of electrified petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. These include updated six- and eight-cylinder petrol engines with mild-hybrid assistance, updated six-cylinder diesel engines with the capacity to meet future stringent emissions regulations, and plug-in hybrid variants with an electric range of up to 100 km (WLTP).

All powertrains are paired with a 48-volt electrical system with integrated starter-generator. Suspension choices include standard AIRMATIC air suspension, with the option of E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL, which provides predictive damping control for long speed bumps.

Rear axle steering is standard with 4.5 degrees of lock, but can be optioned with up to 10 degrees of lock, reducing the turning circle at low speeds.

What safety features are available for the new S-Class?

Safety has always been a major priority for the S-Class, with an enhanced adaptive restraint system and up to 15 airbags, depending on the model chosen.

Mercedes-Benz also offers the S-Class GUARD, a version of the S-Class that has been factory-armoured to the highest standard, meeting the stringent VR10 ballistic standards, aimed at government and security customers.
