Celebrating World Oceans Day with the Alpina Calanda: made from recycled stainless steel

Limited to 300 units

Today is World Oceans Day (June 8) and Swiss watch brand Alpina is marking the occasion with the launch of a new ISO-certified diver made from recycled stainless steel.

Founded in 1883 and currently under the Citizen Group wing, Alpina has often utilised recycled materials for its timepieces but they’re now taking it to a different level because producing recycled stainless steel is infinitely more complicated than recycling plastic or fabric.

The Calanda is part of the Seastrong Diver 300 family and it is named after the eponymous cargo ship built in 1913, the very first vessel to fly under Switzerland’s flag.

The 42 mm case incorporates a unidirectional rotating notched bezel and it houses Alpina’s AL-525 automatic movement with a 38-hour power reserve.

Only 300 units will be available, priced at €1,695 EUR ($1,800).

I’ve had the opportunity to wear another model from the Seastrong (Gyre, pictured below) in the past and it felt solid, a go-anywhere, do-anything watch that’s never really out of place.

This particular piece is obviously designed to swim with the fish in the depth of the oceans but it seems to be it would equally apt for a gala event by the pool.

Dear Alpina, I volunteer to field-test this theory of mine.

The watch does look cool! recycled steel… got to read up on that. Field test… we should get that sorted as well.

I’d like a Gin & tonic in a glass made from recycled Swarovski crystal

hahahahahha I can probably talk to Swarovski for that!

Love that it’s made from recycled steel. The case back artwork is really interesting too!
