Angelus unveils a new watch, the Chronodate Titanium Magnetic Silver Edition

This automatic chronograph, featuring a peripheral date, is now available in a silver-grey “Magnetic Silver” shade, featuring a case made of titanium and carbon composite. It is available with a titanium bracelet and a black rubber strap.

“The omnipresent grey of titanium extends into the sunray-brushed grey of the “Magnetic Silver” dial. Chronodate Titanium expresses its technical sophistication in an ensemble where deep black contrasts with a hint of red. With this ultra-sporty, understated and intense new colour scheme, Chronodate Titanium catches the eye, fixes it and draws it towards the horizon.”

Angelus has unveiled the Chronodate Titanium Magnetic Silver Edition just ahead of Geneva Watch Days, which was held from August 29 until September 2, 2024, in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Chronodate is a chronograph timepiece, featuring a peripheral date, and powered by an automatic movement.

“Chronodate is a fusion of two different styles: Angelus, the historic brand and its Swiss watchmaking heritage, and Angelus, the technical, modern brand with a penchant for complications. With this colour combination, the house presents the most striking version of this chronograph collection.”

Angelus, founded in 1891 in Switzerland, is presently owned by Manufacture La-Joux Perret SA. Both are based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Manufacture La-Joux Perret SA is owned by Japan’s Citizen Group. It provides movements for Arnold & Son and Frédérique Constant, also owned by Citizen Group.

The Chronodate Titanium Magnetic Silver Edition’s dial features include:

– It features a magnetic silver colour dial, with a sunray-brushed finish.

– The syringe shaped hour and minute hands are rhodium plated and coated with Super-LumiNova®.

– The central chronograph hand features a red tip.

– The peripheral date pointer features a red arrow towards the tip.

– The 10 Arabic numerals, applied on the dial, are coated with Super-Luminova®.

– The two subdials at 9 and 3 o’clock are metallic black and feature a snailed pattern. The 30-minute counter hand and four markers on its subdial are red.

– A black 60-second scale, graduated in increments of 5 seconds each, divides the inner dial from the outer dial.

– The outer dial, magnetic silver in colour, features Arabic numerals in black for the date. 31 is at 12 o’clock.

– “ANGELUS” is applied at 12 o’clock, and “CHRONODATE” displayed at 6 o’clock.

“Chronodate serves as a historical reminder of the brand’s origins, as Angelus was a leading manufacturer of chronographs from the 1940s to the 1960s. These timepieces were small in diameter, in keeping with the taste of the time, with particularly large and legible counters. It is only fitting that Angelus now presents a Chronodate with large, easy-to-read counters.

The 30-minute chronograph totaliser and the small seconds are adorned in metallic black with a snailed texture that adds to the modernity of the design. The dominant colour, “Magnetic Silver”, is applied with a fine, matt sunray-brushed effect, set off by applied hour-markers and Arabic numerals with a 1940s aesthetic.”

Movement

The Chronodate Titanium Magnetic Silver Edition’s movement features include:

– It is powered by Calibre A-500 Titanium Edition. It is an automatic column-wheel chronograph movement, which drives the hours, minutes, seconds, chronograph (central and 30-minute counter), and peripheral date.

– Calibre A-500 is a manufacture movement of La-Joux Perret SA.

– Its diameter is 30.00 mm.

– Its height is 7.90 mm.

– It has 26 jewels.

– It beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph or 4 Hz.

– It has a power reserve of 60 hours.

– Its mainplate is sandblasted and NAC-treated.

– Its bridges are microblasted and NAC-Treated, featuring satin-finished edges.

– Its wheels are circular-grained, and rhodium plated.

– Its automatic winding rotor is made of tungsten.

“Angelus has fitted Chronodate Titanium with its own chronograph movement, the A-500 calibre, which displays the small seconds at 9 o’clock and the 30-minute totaliser at 3 o’clock. A pointer-type date display runs around the periphery of the dial. The calibre, oscillating at 4 Hz, is driven by a column wheel. Its self-winding system operates by means of an oscillating weight with a design taken from the brand’s archives: a capital letter “A” above a star, evoking a bell and its clapper. It alludes to the early days of Angelus, right at the heart of the mechanism.”

Case, Bracelet and Strap

The Chronodate Titanium Magnetic Silver Edition’s case, bracelet, and strap features include:

– Its bezel, crown (at 3 o’clock), and monobloc middle case are made of titanium.

– Its chamber, bezel ring, chronograph pushers (at 2 and 4 o’clock), are made of carbon composite. The black pusher at 2 o’clock displays “START” “STOP”, and at 4 o’clock displays “RESET” – all in red.

– The case features satin-finished surfaces and polished chamfers.

– It has a case diameter of 42.50 mm and a case thickness of 14.25 mm.

– On its dial side, it has a box sapphire crystal, with anti-reflective coating on both sides.

– On its caseback, it has a box sapphire crystal with anti-reflective finish.

– It is water resistant up to 3 bar / 30 metres / 100 feet.

– Its titanium bracelet, satin finished, is fitted to a titanium folding buckle.

– Its black rubber strap is fitted to a titanium folding buckle.

– Both are interchangeable.

“Chronodate Titanium embodies the neo-retro approach of Angelus sports chronographs. It offers the highest standards of modernity and comfort with a multi-structured modular case. The movement is housed in a container machined from a rigid yet lightweight carbon composite. The chronograph push-pieces, made from the same material, are applied directly to this case.

Around this container, Angelus has designed an openworked cradle that unites the case middle and lugs in a single line. It also houses the bezel marked with twelve notches. This modular superstructure can accommodate one or more materials. The energy emanating from its chamfered profile and the alternating straight and curved lines give the Chronodate collection a sporty feel. Finally, there is the bracelet, also in titanium: vintage in appearance, with its single, wide links, modern in construction, and very comfortable to wear.”

Our Thoughts

The Chronodate Titanium Magnetic Silver Edition is a bold interpretation of a chronograph featuring an abundance of well executed details. Based on images, it is a great looking timepiece. Angelus has superbly blended vintage elements, such as the 1940’s inspired Arabic numerals, with futuristic elements such as its grey shade, use of titanium and carbon composite, and usage of text such as “START” “STOP” and “RESET” in red on the black chronograph pushers, to name a few. The red and black accents on the dial and case contrast well with the grey shade of the timepiece. The peripheral date is a great feature. It is a vital element of the timepiece’s personality, without taking away its core aspect – the chronograph. Often a great looking chronograph is ruined by a date window at 4.30.

Its price is high, but when you consider the overall details of the timepiece, it’s “in-house” movement (La-Joux Perret SA owns Angelus), featuring a column wheel chronograph (heavily reworked Valjoux 7750, according to online sources), it might be justified to collectors.

For a collector who loves and collects chronographs, passionate about historic brands which have been revived, and are seeking to add a futuristic timepiece with vintage elements to their collection, then the Chronodate Titanium Magnetic Silver Edition is ideal for him or her.
