GM’s F1 Debut Confirmed For 2028

American auto giant General Motors (GM) has confirmed that it has formally registered with the FIA as a Formula 1 power unit manufacturer, starting in the 2028 season. This builds on the development from earlier this year when GM announced its intention to compete in the Formula One World Championship with Andretti Cadillac as the team name. An Expression of Interest was filed with the FIA by Andretti Cadillac earlier this year. It got the relevant approvals to compete in the Formula One World Championship last month. GM says the development and testing of prototype technology is underway. The brand’s president, Mark Reuss, is full of confidence. He said:
We are thrilled that our new Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be powered by a GM power unit. With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we’re confident we’ll develop a successful power unit for the series, and position Andretti Cadillac as a true works team.

WOW! That’s SOME news for F1 – intrigued to see how they fare against others. Also, why aren’t they entering straight in 2026 when the regs change?

I think 2026 would have been tight to get everything in place.
