2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE Revealed: More Power, More Tech, Still The Benchmark SUV

The new Mercedes-Benz GLE arrives with 3,000 updates, a smarter brain, and proper hybrid performance. From a flat-plane V8 to a 585hp AMG hybrid, this one’s playing bold.

What’s New On The 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE?

This isn’t one of those lazy mid-cycle facelifts where the bumper changes slightly, and marketing speak does the rest. Mercedes claims around 3,000 new or revised components, and it actually shows.

The GLE now gets a redesigned exterior, a completely new operating system (MB.OS), updated powertrains across the board, and a suspension setup that’s now predictive rather than reactive. It’s still recognisably a GLE, but under the skin, it’s moved much closer to Mercedes’ latest generation of cars.

What’s The Design & Styling Like?

Visually, Mercedes has taken a measured approach. The proportions haven’t changed, but the details now do more of the talking. The front end gets a larger grille, now available with an illuminated surround and central star, which makes sure it’s recognisable even in your rear-view mirror at night.

The redesigned headlamps introduce a new signature with dual horizontal star elements, while the optional Digital Light system with up to 600m beam range adds proper substance. At the rear, the star theme continues with 3D LED taillights, giving the GLE a more distinctive identity after dark. New colours like Dark Petrol and Manufaktur Patagonia Red metallic, along with fresh 20-inch wheels, complete the visual update.

What’s Inside The New GLE? Interior & Tech:

Inside is where the biggest leap happens. The GLE now gets the MBUX Superscreen as standard, which combines three 12.3-inch displays under a single glass panel across the dashboard.

Yes, it looks like a spaceship. But unlike earlier systems, this one is backed by serious computing power. At the core is the new MB.OS operating system, a vehicle-wide architecture that uses AI and cloud connectivity to continuously evolve. It integrates navigation, entertainment, vehicle settings, and even third-party apps into one ecosystem.

The passenger display isn’t just for show. It can stream video content while driving, but a camera system ensures the driver isn’t distracted, dimming the screen if needed.

Tech highlights:

  • 3 × 12.3-inch displays (driver + central + passenger)
  • Optional 18-inch augmented reality head-up display
  • AI-powered MBUX with ChatGPT integration
  • 40+ apps, including video, gaming, and productivity
  • Burmester 3D audio: 15 speakers, 710W

How Powerful Is The New Mercedes-Benz GLE?

This is where Mercedes quietly flexes. The GLE lineup now spans everything from efficient plug-in hybrids to a proper V8 with some unexpected engineering.

GLE 580 4MATIC (V8)

The headline act on the non-AMG side is still the V8. It’s a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 that produces 530hp & 750 Nm, pushing the car from 0–100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. The big change comes in the form of a flat-plane crankshaft, similar to the new S-Class. It fundamentally changes how the engine responds: quicker revving, sharper delivery, and less of that old-school lazy V8 feel.

GLE 450 4MATIC (Inline-6 Petrol)

This is likely where most buyers will land, and it makes a strong case. Mercedes-Benz hasn’t quoted power output figures, but torque is up by 12%, taking the figure to 560Nm. It’s smoother, more responsive, and backed by an integrated starter generator that makes stop-start and low-speed driving feel almost seamless.

GLE 450e (PHEV)

This is the sleeper pick of the range. It produces 429hp combined and has an electric-only range of 106km and an electric-only top speed of 140km/h. Quite impressive. It’s quick enough, but more importantly, it can run like an EV during daily use, which actually matters in real-world ownership.

Mercedes-AMG GLE 53: Is This Now The One To Have?

With no V8-powered AMG variant mentioned, the GLE 53 models now carry the performance flag, and they’re far from a compromise (except for having two cylinders less). The standard AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ uses a revised 3.0-litre inline-six producing 449hp, supported by a 48V system adding an extra 23hp when needed. It produces 600Nm, rising to 640Nm with overboost, and 0–100 km/h takes just 4.9 seconds.

The more compelling option, though, is the AMG GLE 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+. This combines the same engine with a 135kW electric motor, delivering a total of 585hp and 750Nm. The electric motor alone produces 480Nm instantly, which eliminates turbo lag and makes the car feel immediately responsive.

Performance improves accordingly, with 0–100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, while still offering an electric-only range of around 90km. Charging is practical too, with 11kW AC as standard and optional 60kW DC fast charging, allowing a 10–80% charge in roughly 20 minutes.

Ride & Handling: Is It Still A Benchmark For Comfort?

The GLE has always been one of the most comfortable SUVs in its class, and this update leans even harder into that strength, but with more intelligence behind it.

The e-Active Body Control system analyses driving conditions 1,000 times per second, adjusting each wheel individually to control body movement. It can counter roll, pitch, and squat in real time, giving the GLE a wide dynamic range depending on the selected drive mode.

The bigger innovation is the new cloud-based damper control integrated with AIRMATIC. Using data shared from other vehicles (Car-to-X), the system can anticipate road imperfections like speed bumps and potholes, and adjust the suspension before the car even reaches them. How cool is that?

How Practical Is The New GLE?

Despite all the tech and performance upgrades, the GLE hasn’t forgotten its core job. It still offers:

  • Up to 2,055 litres of boot space
  • Adjustable rear seating with increased flexibility
  • Optional third-row seating
  • 3.5-tonne towing capacity

The Verdict: This Is a Proper Evolution

The new GLE simply improves everything that already worked well and brings with it more tech than ever before. The engines are stronger and more efficient, the cabin finally feels fully up to date, and the suspension tech pushes comfort even further ahead of most rivals.
