2025 Spanish GP: Piastri Triumphs in Barcelona as McLaren Clinch Dominant 1–2 Finish

McLaren celebrated a commanding one-two finish at the 2025 Spanish Grand Prix, with Oscar Piastri taking his fifth victory of the season. Charles Leclerc secured the final podium position for Ferrari after an action-packed 66-lap race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

From pole position, Oscar Piastri got off the line cleanly to maintain the lead at the start. Max Verstappen surged past Norris into second place, while Lewis Hamilton overtook his former team-mate George Russell to move up to fourth. Charles Leclerc followed suit, climbing to fifth despite a slight brush with Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli.

Antonelli ran wide at Turn 1, rejoining in seventh, while Nico Hülkenberg made up five places in a stellar opening lap. By Lap 5, Piastri had stretched a two-second advantage over Verstappen.

The Ferrari pair soon found themselves fighting for position. On Lap 10, team radio instructed Hamilton to allow Leclerc through into fourth. Meanwhile, Verstappen began to struggle with grip, allowing Norris to pounce and reclaim second, re-establishing McLaren’s one-two at the front.

Further back, Fernando Alonso had a brief trip through the gravel but managed to rejoin without damage.

Around Lap 22, the first wave of pit stops saw Verstappen take over as race leader, while Piastri rejoined five seconds behind the Dutchman. Contact between Liam Lawson and Alex Albon damaged Albon’s front wing, earning the Williams driver a 10-second penalty. After serving his penalty, Albon retired from the race.

Verstappen pitted again on Lap 30 for medium tyres and re-emerged in fourth, just ahead of Hamilton.

Hamilton’s second pit stop on Lap 47 was hampered by a 4.9-second delay, dropping him behind both Mercedes cars. On Lap 55, Antonelli slid off at Turn 10 and became beached in the gravel, triggering a Safety Car period.

McLaren, both Ferraris, Verstappen and Russell all took the opportunity to pit again. When the race resumed five laps later, Piastri held his lead, while Leclerc and Russell immediately attacked Verstappen for third.

Contact between Russell and Verstappen forced the Red Bull off into the run-off. Leclerc took advantage to snatch third place, but Verstappen rejoined ahead of Russell. Told by race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase to return the position, Verstappen refused and made further contact with Russell. A lap later, Russell moved ahead anyway, and the incident was placed under investigation.

Meanwhile, Hülkenberg overtook Hamilton for fifth in a strong performance for Kick Sauber.

Following the stewards’ review, Verstappen was handed a 10-second penalty, demoting him to tenth. At the front, Oscar Piastri crossed the line to claim a strong win, leading a McLaren one-two in Barcelona. Charles Leclerc completed the podium for Ferrari.
