2025 Sao Paulo GP Preview: What to Expect at Autódromo José Carlos Pace

The Formula 1 season heads to São Paulo for one of the most iconic stops on the calendar: the Sao Paulo Grand Prix at Autódromo José Carlos Pace.

With only four races remaining, the championship fight is entering its decisive phase, and every point matters more than ever.

After a tense battle in Mexico, Lando Norris arrives in Sao Paulo as the new championship leader, just ahead of Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen. The top three are separated by only 36 points, and with Autódromo José Carlos Pace suiting McLaren’s characteristics, this weekend could prove pivotal.

The Autódromo José Carlos Pace is a demanding circuit featuring 15 corners over 4.3 kilometres, combining medium-speed sequences, elevation changes, and one of the most passionate crowds in Formula 1.

Almost 90% of the corners are medium-speed, making this a circuit that naturally fits the McLaren’s strengths. While the long straight of the final sector might give Red Bull an edge in top speed, the Senna S, the infield section, and the technical middle sector should strongly favour McLaren’s downforce balance.

Last season, McLaren’s pace was unmatched and if the conditions stay dry, there’s every chance the papaya cars will dominate again.

Weather and Setup Challenges

Early forecasts suggested potential rain over the weekend, but at the moment, only a slim chance remains. Still, the threat of sudden showers can never be ignored.

The Autódromo José Carlos Pace is also notorious for its bumpy surface and elevation changes. Even with last year’s resurfacing, Turn 1 remains one of the trickiest on the circuit. This could be McLaren’s only vulnerability if they struggle to manage front suspension response on entry.

Red Bull, meanwhile, could face a different challenge. Their car performs best when running close to the ground, something that this track’s undulations make difficult. If the ride height setup isn’t perfected, Red Bull may again find McLaren holding the upper hand.

To complicate matters further, it’s a Sprint weekend, meaning teams have limited time to perfect their setups before parc fermé conditions apply, a factor that cost McLaren dearly in Austin earlier this season.

Championship Dynamics: Pressure Mounts on McLaren and Verstappen

All eyes are on McLaren’s internal battle. With Norris now leading Piastri by just 8 points, how the team manages its two title contenders will be crucial. Team strategy, pit stop calls, and qualifying order could all define the outcome of this championship run-in.

Red Bull, by contrast, find themselves under rare pressure. Verstappen’s gap to the McLarens has widened, and with four races left after Brazil, the Dutchman needs a win to stay alive in the title race. Sao Paulo has traditionally been kind to him and a victory here could reignite his momentum.

Ferrari, too, could be in the mix. Their mechanical grip and improved tyre management make it a strong candidate for podium contention, particularly if track temperatures remain moderate.

Who Else to Watch

Mercedes: Cooler conditions could bring them into play, though the car’s handling over long, loaded corners remains inconsistent. Expect strong qualifying, but possible tyre fade in the race.

Aston Martin: If reliability holds, Fernando Alonso could challenge the front-runners. The track’s traction zones suit Aston Martin’s strengths.

Alpine: Still in development limbo, with their focus already on 2026. Any points finish would be a success.

Sauber: All eyes on Gabriel Bortoleto, who will become the first Brazilian since Rubens Barrichello to race at home for Sauber. The local pressure will be immense.

Racing Bulls & Williams: Expect solid midfield pace. Liam Lawson continues to impress on technical tracks, while Carlos Sainz could once again be Williams’ main points scorer.
