2025 Italian GP Preview: Can Ferrari Shine at Monza?

Formula 1 returns without pause this weekend as we head to the legendary Temple of Speed for the 2025 Italian Grand Prix.

For Ferrari, this is the race where dreams of victory feel possible. If there is one circuit on the calendar where the Scuderia Ferrari can maximise its package, it’s here. The characteristics of Monza, dominated by long straights and heavy traction zones, mean Ferrari’s earlier issues with floor wear in medium-to-high speed corners should not be as costly. With only Ascari truly testing high-speed balance, Ferrari has a rare opportunity to run their car low, extract maximum efficiency, and race on the front foot.

Ferrari vs McLaren: Contrasting Challenges

McLaren’s biggest weakness heading into Monza is top speed. Their struggles with straight-line pace and heavy braking zones mean extracting maximum performance in qualifying will be tricky. The car’s front end still lacks the sharpness drivers crave under braking, making single-lap efforts a challenge. As such, Ferrari looks far better positioned, while McLaren could find themselves under pressure unless they lock out the front row.

Last year, pit stop strategy errors cost McLaren dearly, but a repeat seems unlikely. If they end up chasing from behind, overtaking may prove difficult given their straight-line deficit.

Norris Penalty Watch – and the Grid Shuffle

Another factor that could swing the balance is Lando Norris’ potential grid penalty. If McLaren cannot salvage his engine, he could drop ten places, instantly changing the race dynamic. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton is already carrying a five-place penalty, which could leave Charles Leclerc without direct support against Oscar Piastri at the front. This weekend may evolve into a Leclerc vs Piastri showdown, unless Norris avoids the penalty.

Mercedes is Ready to Fight

Do not count Mercedes out. With major improvements to rear-end stability this season, their straight-line performance is much stronger, and both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli could factor into the pole position battle. Monza’s fresh asphalt, laid just last year, should play into their hands. A lot will depend on track temperature – if surface heat reaches 45–50°C, Mercedes may suffer with rear tyre degradation, but in cooler conditions, they could be right in the mix.

What About Red Bull?

Monza has historically been a weakness for Red Bull. Their balance issues in slow corners, particularly the Turn 1–2 chicane, have been costly in past seasons. Last year, they lacked a low-downforce rear wing and paid for it on the straights. This year, however, they arrive better prepared after testing such setups in Britain and Belgium. Even so, Red Bull may find themselves only the fourth-fastest team here – behind Ferrari, McLaren, and Mercedes.

Midfield Battles to Watch

Behind the front-runners, expect fireworks in the midfield. Haas vs Williams could be a highlight, with Haas looking stronger in Monza’s layout. Aston Martin may struggle with straight-line speed, while Racing Bulls could spring a surprise in qualifying. Alpine, on the other hand, is likely to slip further back.

Sector-by-Sector Predictions

Sector 1: Ferrari’s top speed and traction advantage should make them kings of the Rettifilo.

Sector 2: McLaren could shine through Lesmo 1 and 2, where their car thrives in medium-speed corners.

Sector 3: Expect either Red Bull or Mercedes to fight back through Ascari and Parabolica.

Overall, Mercedes may be competitive across all sectors, giving them a chance to disrupt Ferrari and McLaren’s dominance.
