Oscar Piastri claimed a commanding win for McLaren at the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, surviving mixed conditions, three Safety Car periods and late drama as both Ferraris failed to finish.
When the five red lights went out, Piastri held his lead off the line, while Max Verstappen, starting on soft tyres, passed Lando Norris to move into second place. Further back, Alex Albon gained five positions from 15th on the grid to run 10th by the end of lap one. Contact between Lance Stroll and Gabriel Bortoleto at Turn 11 was noted by the stewards.
On lap nine, Norris fought back, overtaking Verstappen to reclaim second place. As the opening 20 laps unfolded, Piastri led comfortably but reported raindrops on his visor. Several drivers opted to pit as conditions shifted.
A few laps later, Lewis Hamilton crashed into the barriers on the exit of Turn 3, triggering the Safety Car and prompting the entire field to pit. When racing resumed, Piastri maintained the lead over his McLaren team-mate. Shortly afterwards, Liam Lawson and Carlos Sainz collided at Turn 1, earning Sainz a 10-second penalty for causing the incident.
At half-distance, debris on the track brought out a Virtual Safety Car. After racing resumed, Charles Leclerc and George Russell went wheel-to-wheel for fifth place, with Leclerc eventually coming out on top.
On lap 53, Leclerc battled Kimi Antonelli but made contact, sending the Ferrari into the barriers and out of the race. Antonelli received a 10-second penalty for the collision and was also noted for speeding in the pit lane.
With just a few laps remaining, Norris — running second — was forced to retire due to a technical issue, ending McLaren’s hopes of a one-two finish.
After 72 laps, Piastri crossed the line to secure victory, followed by home hero Max Verstappen for Red Bull. Rookie Isack Hadjar delivered a stunning performance to take his maiden F1 podium in third. Russell finished fourth, with Albon completing the top five.
