McLaren Racing’s Lando Norris claimed an emotional home victory at a rain-hit and incident-packed 2025 British Grand Prix, leading a McLaren 1–2 at Silverstone as Nico Hülkenberg secured a surprise podium for Stake F1 Team.
The race began under dramatic circumstances even before the lights went out. As the field took their places on the grid after the formation lap, both Charles Leclerc and George Russell dived into the pits to change tyres—setting the tone for what was to be a strategy-driven Grand Prix.
Once the five red lights went out, Max Verstappen retained the lead from pole, but the action escalated quickly. Before the first lap was completed, a collision between Esteban Ocon and Liam Lawson brought out the Virtual Safety Car. Lawson spun into the barriers, while Ocon continued. Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli took the opportunity to switch to slick tyres.
As the VSC ended, another incident saw Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto crash at Turn 2, triggering a full Safety Car. Racing resumed on Lap 7, and just one lap later, Oscar Piastri made an impressive move on Verstappen to take the lead.
On Lap 11, rain began to intensify, leading to the closure of DRS. Most drivers on slicks dived into the pits for intermediates. In the battle for second, Verstappen made a rare error and ran wide, allowing Norris through.
A flurry of pit stops followed, but Norris lost time during a slow stop, gifting second place back to Verstappen. The worsening weather brought out another Safety Car on Lap 14 after Leclerc ran off the track. Shortly after the restart, Isack Hadjar crashed, prompting yet another Safety Car period.
The restart saw Verstappen spin and tumble down to 10th place. Piastri came under investigation for a Safety Car infringement and was handed a 10-second time penalty. Antonelli retired on team orders, while Yuki Tsunoda received a 10-second penalty after contact with Oliver Bearman.
As the track dried around Lap 34, DRS was re-enabled. Nico Hülkenberg seized the moment, overtaking Lance Stroll for third. Lewis Hamilton followed through to snatch fourth place.
George Russell, now on slicks, spun dramatically but avoided a major crash. With 10 laps to go, Hamilton pitted for soft tyres, and Piastri served his penalty—handing the lead to Lando Norris.
A clash between the Haas drivers nearly derailed their races, but at the end of the 52-lap epic, it was Norris who crossed the line first to the delight of the home crowd. Piastri completed a memorable McLaren 1–2, while Hülkenberg celebrated his first podium since 2023.
