HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE CONCORSO ITALIANO U.A.E?
Some classy Italians visit Dubai.
Recently there was a Concorso Italiano held in Dubai. I met with the organizer, Mr Zaher, during the event and asked him a few questions.
HI MR ZAHER, PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO OUR READERS.
My name is Zaher Samman. I’m a Canadian citizen residing in Dubai, UAE since 1993.
I KNOW YOU HAVE A COLLECTION OF INTERESTING CARS. PLEASE SHARE SOME STORIES.
Ever since I can remember, I have been a car fanatic, and my love story with cars is much too long to describe in a few sentences, but over the past 15 years or so I have developed a passion for classic cars and started collecting cars that meant something to me or reminded me of my youth. So yes I have a beautiful little personal classic car collection consisting of mainly Italian cars, such as Ferraris and Alfa Romeos and Maserati and Fiat. I also have a few American classics such as a 62 Corvette and a Shelby Cobra and British and French and German. Still, the Italians have always been my cup of tea.
WHY CONCORSO ITALIANO UAE. WHY NOT OTHER COUNTRIES?
Italian cars have always been symbols of art and passion. Everyone on Earth, young and old loves Italian cars, especially luxury and sports brands like Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati. On top of that, I am passionate myself about these brands. So it was an easy decision. However, we also have plans to organize Concours events for German, British, and possibly even American cars.
ALSO, WHY CHOOSE A PARTICULAR ERA. WHY NOT AFTER THE 2000S?
We set 2000 as the cutoff year, and we made that decision based on a few factors. Still, primarily because in pre-2000, cars were designed by humans with pencils and crayons rather than computers. Besides, the new millennium began an era of modernization and innovation, and that is basically anti classic.
WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE ITALIAN CAR OF ALL TIME?
The Ferrari 288 GTO
WHICH WAS YOUR FAVOURITE CAR AT THE CONCURSE?
Difficult question, but it was probably a tie between the Lamborghini Countach and the Ferrari Daytona.
TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT THE JUDGING PROCESS & WHO WAS THE JURY?
It was a panel of three judges, but unfortunately, one had to cancel at the last moment because of a medical emergency. They were very respected experts in classic Italian cars. One of the judges worked with Ferrari in Maranello for many years, and the other judge was the foremost authority in classic car restoration in the UAE. Judging was based on a point merit system devised before the event, that covered basically every aspect of the car.
WHAT PLANS IN THE FUTURE?
We will be organizing the same event again this year. The final date has still not been officially announced, but I can assure you that it will be even bigger and better than last year.
Enjoy the image gallery below. The cars were in excellent condition and most of them were driven to the event by their owners! Which was your favorite car? Let me know in the comments below.
